What Happened To Our "Secular Humanistic Republic?"
A political disease dangerous to democracy and the common good -- unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power -- is stealthily attacking America from within.
The political disease is the ancient wealth-and-power disease: separate forms of wealth and power -- economic power, political power, military power, religious power, and in modern times media power -- consolidate into an unstoppable force, take wealth and power from others, and hurt them in the process.
During the past tens of millennia our human forebears -- aided by natural moral emotion and natural moral behavior: moral disgust and moral outrage in response to corruption and unfairness, which triggers automatic social cooperation to end the corruption and unfairness -- developed wisdom to fight and prevent the disease. Ancient Greece even wrote and spoke a vocabulary that describes and warns of the disease (see below). America's founders, by applying that wealth of wisdom from the past, revolted against the disease, created America, and wrote a Constitution and Bill of Rights full of homeland-security defenses to prevent the disease from ever flaring up inside America.
But the Framers' inoculations were not strong enough to stop the new strain growing inside America. This new form of the disease (summarized in the next section) is so virulent it knocked out our homeland-security, national-security vigilance against wealth-and-power threats from within, overpowered and overrode our system of supreme-law defenses that protected America from becoming subverted and hurt by internal wealth-and-power, and replaced our Secular Humanistic Republic with a different form of government (explained later in this section) abhorrent to ancient Greece and America's founders.
The disease has already wounded and weakened America so gravely we don't know what "Secular Humanistic Republic" means anymore or how America, by law, is such a wonderful kind of nation. So dangerously we don't even know about the arsenal of homeland/national-security defenses that were written into our Constitution to ward off wealth-and-power threats from within, or about who is responsible for keeping those defenses ready and strong.
Other symptoms of the disease: 9/11. Iraq. Big losses of justice, general welfare, and liberty in our homeland. Huge losses of citizen wealth and citizen power in America. Large annual losses of homeland lives to the disease. Failure of our press to fully and honestly report these symptoms of the disease. Willingness of our press to help spread the disease. (More about all this in the next section.)
What are some of the core American principles that all of us are supposed to know about and cherish today?
What is America supposed to be like today?
"[T]he government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion." In 1797,one decade after our Constitution was written, this affirmation of secularism and separation of church and state became "supreme Law of the Land."
"We, the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America." Thus the first sentence of our US Constitution calls upon We the People -- as united, cooperative, socially-responsible, secular human beings -- to provide far more goodness, far more humanity, to ourselves and our posterity than the Ten Commandments do. The opening sentence of our US Constitution specifies the Public Interest, the National Interest, our true American Values, our basic Moral Values -- which are all generously humanitarian, which are all supreme Law of the Land.
A republic: a state in which supreme power lies in citizens who vote for representatives responsible to them; a state with government of, by, and for We the People. "Of" and "by" means that We the People are the government. Our "supreme power" means that We the People have ultimate power over the White House and Congress and Supreme Court (our Constitution even provides us with a way to replace unjust judges on the Supreme Court). With our supreme power comes supreme responsibility to carry out our "supreme Law of the Land." "For" means that We the People, and our posterity, are the beneficiaries of all this: in return for civic effort made and taxes paid during our principled self-governance of America, We the People and our future generations receive well-being benefits. This is the Social Contract. The benefits of our Social Contract, listed in the first sentence of our Constitution, are bountiful and wondrous -- especially the justice, general-welfare, and liberty benefits that free us to pursue opportunity, fortune, and happiness.
Our Bill of Rights -- our freedom of speech, freedom of the press, unabridged peaceable assembly, freedom to petition for redress of grievances, right of trial by jury, even our freedom of religion and our right to keep and bear arms -- all serve to strengthen our ability to carry out our Bill of Responsibilities: "We, the People" create, operate, and vigilantly oversee our democratic processes and representative governance, and we "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity;" these supreme responsibilities lay and maintain the democratic, moral, common-good bedrock foundation that supports our pursuit of opportunity, fortune, and happiness in our "more perfect Union."
Laws passed by Congress, executed by the White House, and upheld by the Supreme Court must be laws "made in Pursuance [of]" of our Constitution. If a law hurts our democratic processes or representative governance or hurts "Justice," "domestic Tranquility," "the common defence," "the general Welfare," or "Liberty," for "ourselves and our Posterity," then the law is not "made in Pursuance [of]" our Constitution and thus is not "supreme Law of the Land." Such law is bad law, unjust law, illegal law. Today there are many bad laws that serve wealth-and-power at the expense of our democracy and common good. Not all law is sacred. Only good law is sacred, law that lives up to the humane spirit of Constitution. We the People have supreme power -- and supreme responsibility -- to force our executive and legislative and judicial representatives to be responsible to us, to heed our Constitution, to remove or correct bad laws. And we have the civic power and civic duty to reprimand and replace those representatives who don't. This is how the American republic and American citizens are supposed to think and function.
The founders of our nation tried hard to prevent the ancient wealth-and-power disease from ever flaring up inside America, from ever taking governance away from We the People, from ever hurting our citizens and posterity, as evidenced by this short-list of homeland-security measures they wrote into our Constitution (I'm just an ordinary citizen and surely experts in Constitutional law can rattle off many others): Full, unfettered, open democratic processes -- and transparent, responsive, truly representative governance -- to keep the wealth-and-power disease in check and thus America a republic. "[I]nsure domestic Tranquility" so that citizens don't pit themselves against each other, to keep We the People able to unite and cooperate to fight the disease. "[P]rovide for the common defence" against the disease. "[N]o religious Test[s]" to prevent religion in public servants and other members of the public trust from feeding the disease. Trial by jury as a direct citizen check against unjust prosecution and unjust courts and unjust laws spawned by the disease (juries have a supreme duty to nullify bad laws not "made in Pursuance [of]" our Constitution). Separation of powers, and separation of church and state, to prevent separate components of wealth and power from consolidating and growing into the disease. Freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, to sound alarms about the disease and to call for citizen action to fight and cure the disease.
The half-dozen paragraphs above contain some of the core basics of our "Secular" "Humanistic" "Republic" -- our country's purpose and goals, our national moral values, our method of governance, our citizen responsibilities -- that all of us are supposed to deeply understand, hold dear in our hearts, proudly live up to, vigilantly protect, and resolutely carry out.
The Secular Humanistic Republic -- in our US Constitution -- is supposed to be the source and meaning of American Patriotism and American Pride, what our Flag represents, what our troops fight and die for.
What happened to America?
First, the political disease erased America's core principles from our public education and public mind. Even our American Values have vanished. That gradual, stealthy purging of knowledge of our country's very soul -- together with spin-and-hide deceptions and divide-and-conquer manipulations relentlessly administered by their media machine -- made it quite easy for the disease to attack America from the inside, to overpower and override the homeland/national-security system in our Constitution, and then to weaken and transform our original principled self-governance into a new form of government that feeds and grows the disease.
So. What kind of government does America have today? Theocratic Plutocratic Kakistocracy. (Besides "theocracy," "plutocracy," and "kakistocracy," ancient Greece also coined "democracy.") Our theocracy is based on a new brand of Christianity that arose a century after our republic was founded -- a very inhumane form of Christianity, born-again Christian Zionism, the religion of the Christian Right, a new religion starkly different from the Christianity of America's founders and morally appalling to modern mainstream Christianity. Plutocratic, of course, means rule by the wealthy class. America's new plutocracy is exceptionally dangerous: their inhumane taking of wealth and power from others here and abroad, without remorse for the collateral harm and death they inflict, is condoned and encouraged by a theocratic ally they courted and recruited a quarter-century ago, the Christian Right. Kakistocracy is government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens. America's kakistocracy is exceptionally unqualified -- and exceptionally unprincipled -- as shown by how our kakistocracy's citizen representatives and political parties and national press have deceptively switched alliance from serving We the People and our Charter-of-Freedom goals to serving consolidated wealth-and-power and their goals to take and hoard more and more wealth and power here and abroad, as shown by their numerous and massive acts of contempt for the supreme law and common-good humanity embodied in our Constitution. Such is our new Theocratic Plutocratic Kakistocracy which began to rise to power around 1980 and is rapidly gaining strength today.
From Secular Humanistic Republic to Theocratic Plutocratic Kakistocracy. From lawfulness and humanity to unlawfulness and inhumanity. From government of, by, and for We the People to government of, by, and for Wealth and Power. It happened gradually over the past quarter century. So shrewdly and stealthily few Americans are aware. Exactly what the founders of our nation feared and tried hard to prevent.
The effects are frightening. Tragically, American Patriotism and American Pride today are based on our new Theocratic Plutocratic Kakistocracy and its cruel aims, values, and methods: Prey upon and take and hoard wealth and power from others, here and abroad, by whatever means it takes. Use deception, manipulation, even force. If illegal, immoral, destructive, or deadly, no problem, the media machine will spin it down and cover it up. Silence all dissent and grievances. Crush all civic calls to return America to the lawful and humane republic in our Constitution. Trick conservatives and liberals, trick our nation's institutions, and trick our new generations to assist wealth-and-power to take and hoard wealth and power from others. Tragically, this is what our Flag represents today, what our troops fight and die for. America and the world suffer for it.
Our wealth-and-power enemy of today is more corrupt and more immoral, and more dangerous to democracy and the common good, than the wealth-and-power enemy of 1776.
Worry not. The Framers of our Constitution, and our evolutional and historical pasts, provide a repertoire of potent methods to neutralize the wealth-and-power disease and return our America to its lawful and humane true course.
Even our First-Amendment freedom of religion can help. To combat the inhumanity that runaway wealth-and-power and their Christian-Right ally are breeding into America, mainstream-religion churches by the thousands could team up, and in unison from the pulpit vigorously promote a revival of humanity -- a revival of providing human-to-human goodness expecting nothing in return, a revival of building a broad and strong foundation of common good -- a goal very much in harmony with the Public Interest, National Interest, and American Values in the first sentence of our Constitution.
Even our Second Amendment can assist: "[B]eing necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed." Imagine conservatives by the millions accurately aiming and firing their symbolic Minutemen rifles of 1776 at the leaders of the right-wing homeland enemy.
After we restore the Secular Humanistic Republic we won in American Revolution I -- that is, after we complete the long-overdue full maintenance and tune-up of our self-governance and common good called for by our Constitution, American Revolution II -- perhaps we'll annually celebrate the revolt's launching declaration (outlined herein) like we celebrate the Fourth of July.
America's Worst Enemy
Several national political powers that were wisely kept separated in the past to prevent them from teaming up to gain strength, acting selfishly to take and hoard wealth and power from our citizens and Fifty States and from other nations, and hurting the domestic and international common good in the process -- America's wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, advertising/PR/news/entertainment mass-media power, Christian-Right religious power -- around 1980 began to consolidate into a single state power.
Today they are adding homeland police-state power, and more global intelligence/military power, to their juggernaut for taking wealth and power here and abroad. They are planning space-based weapons to fire at targets on Earth -- "In Your Face From Outer Space" boasts the Space Warfare Center's motto. They are planning nonlethal electromagnetic weapons to immobilize masses -- including for crowd control here at home as reported in the news.
That unchecked consolidation of wealth-and-power is the homeland enemy, the enemy within, the wealth-and-power disease the Framers of our Constitution tried to spare their future America from.
They are "right wing," not "conservative." (The "right wing" hides behind a "conservative" mask.)
Their media machine deceives and manipulates the American public to their will, so that they can easily take and hoard wealth and power from here and abroad and from future generations.
They are vastly more dangerous to America -- that is, to our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being -- than terrorism.
They have already breached our homeland/national security. That is, they have already breached the homeland/national security of -- and harmed -- our democratic processes, representative governance, and all five classes of common well-being.
Some of the adverse effects:
9/11: In the 1980s they bred militant Islam into their proxy US military weapon to fight Russians in Afghanistan, then after the Russians left they abandoned their loaded weapon and let it spill out into the world and grow more deadly, which led to 9/11. Their War On Terror, a war on their own proxy military weapon, is in essence a Weapon Disposal Program undertaken twenty years too late.
Iraq: Their long-premeditated armed heist of Iraq's wealth and power, launched under pretenses of Defending America and Giving The Gift Of Democracy To Iraq, has gone terribly bad at huge wealth-and-power/flesh-and-blood costs to Americans also -- and at future cost to America and the world because their venture energizes terrorism. All of which caters to their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right political bases (explained herein). Although their heist was in the works for about a decade before they launched it, although it heavily violates international law and our Constitution, their media machine will not breathe a word of it.
Homeland collateral damage from their mounting heist of wealth and power from We the People: Loss of justice and general welfare and liberty. Loss of life at the rate of at least sixteen 9/11s a year. Loss of citizen wealth -- well-being wealth and financial wealth at the rate of at least $2 trillion annually. Loss of citizen power; they have neutered the supreme power of We the People so totally that America's usual methods of democracy cannot possibly stop their subversion of our self-governance or the harm they inflict on the common good.
A nation skillfully kept clueless: Their media machine deceives and manipulates America so effectively we barely know about the homeland enemy or their massive wrongdoing.
Worry not. A broad-based coalition of concerned citizens, groups, and leaders -- in a resolute re-run of what we celebrate every Fourth of July -- could document all the offenses, put them into a list like the long list of injustices that fills more than half our Declaration of Independence, precisely explain to the entire American public how the homeland enemy and their media machine violate our Constitution from the Preamble onward through the Articles and deep into the Amendments, and let the resulting moral disgust and moral outrage ignite and build unity-and-cooperation to fix America as effectively as it did to create America.
Of Course We Can Win Big
The four-element plan woven into this document and summarized in the conclusion -- a big-picture full solution -- comes from our genetic survival urges, ancient wisdom of humankind, early American history, Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Bill of Rights (the last three are deeply rooted in the first two, as explained herein).
Why unite and cooperate -- all conservatives and liberals, all public-interest groups, all educators, all concerned political and business and religious leaders -- and just do it?
Reason one:
The small right-wing homeland enemy -- an out-of-control illegal fusion of wealth and power -- has already made certain that our standard methods of democracy barely work anymore and cannot possibly stop their destruction of our principled self-governance, or halt their escalating plunder of citizen wealth and national assets, or slow their mounting social/economic/bodily collateral harm to the public.
Their media machine masks who they are, hides and aids their wrongdoing, and manipulates citizens by the millions to unwittingly support their wrongdoing and lend a helping hand.
Including by disguising how the red and blue parties are two flavors of the political monopoly that serves wealth-and-power. Such as by how they make us think that the Commission on Presidential Debates is a taxpayer-funded federal commission run fairly; in reality it is a private corporation created in 1987 by the Republican and Democratic parties, it is funded by corporations who give big money to both parties, and it locks out candidates from all other parties. They lead us to believe that we have distinctly different democratic choices. We have no idea that no matter who we vote for today, we vote to further entrench the homeland enemy -- more so by voting red, less so by voting blue.
Reason two:
The well-proven civic-power strategies herein -- some were used to create America -- are potent and surefire and can neutralize the homeland enemy and its media machine, repair the damage and heal the wounds they inflicted, and return our nation to the law and humanity in our Constitution and grow our "more perfect Union."
The key is to restore America's representative governance by democratically overpowering the red/blue political monopoly (which carries out the wishes of Corporate America and the Christian Right in return for tons of corporate cash and a block of Christian-Right votes) with a new political party (devoted to We the People and our Constitution), then apply our Constitution to do many other good things "to ourselves and our Posterity." Including to blow down the illegal house of cards known as "corporate personhood" and to replace most of today's Supreme Court judges.
Reason three:
We the People vastly outnumber the relatively few members of the right-wing homeland enemy -- 500-to-1 against their wealth/corporate core, 10-to-1 against their Christian-Right core -- and we are directed and bound by our Constitution to rise up and win.
"United We Stand, Divided We Fall" was a key strategy that We the People applied to fight the right-wing enemy of 1776; the slogan's first word became part of our nation's name. We must apply that strategy against right-wing homeland enemy of today. We must do it to overcome their many divide-and-conquer manipulations relentlessly administered and reinforced by their media machine -- manipulations that pit conservatives against liberals, conservatives against conservatives, liberals against liberals, manipulations that make us think and act selfishly and blind us to the common good and block us from acting toward the common good, manipulations that replace "domestic Tranquility" with domestic discord and unity with divisiveness, manipulations that deaden the fierce moral feeling and action for the common good that pulses though our Declaration of Independence, skillful manipulations that prevent conservative and liberals from uniting and cooperating against the common enemy: the small dangerous "right wing" falsely portrayed by their media machine as a righteous majority that's good for America.
Ignite Our NATURAL Civic Power
The innate human response to corruption and unfairness? Feelings of moral disgust and moral outrage, then automatic social cooperation to end the corruption and unfairness. Modern science is discovering this to be genetic survival emotion and survival behavior, the roots of human morality. A cherished, celebrated written record of this natural moral response to corruption and unfairness? Our Declaration of Independence.
Enlightened nations, and America's Charters of Freedom, foster this natural moral emotion and natural moral behavior in order to protect and advance the common good. For example: Our Declaration of Independence encourages such feeling and action toward the common good. The Preamble of our Constitution requires America to have unity and cooperation toward the common good, and for We the People as a united-and-cooperative union to defend America against threats to the common good, the same moral theme in our Declaration of Independence. Our First Amendment protects free speech toward the common good -- no matter how strongly accusative against authority acting against the common good -- including any free speech modeled after, serving the same purpose as, and as emotional, inflammatory, dissentful, and effective as our Declaration of Independence; such freedom of speech is a vital part of America's homeland/national security against internal threats to our self-governance and well-being.
However in today's America the homeland enemy and their media machine are manipulatively disabling our moral disgust, moral outrage, and social cooperation as part of their broad attack on basic abilities that make We the People human: respect, responsibility, cooperation, critical thinking. Without respect, responsibility, cooperation, and critical thinking infused into citizens during youth and steadily reinforced throughout their lives in accordance with the tens-of-millennia wise tradition of humankind, the population as a whole cannot fathom our Constitution or desire to live up to it, and cannot perceive or defend against disguised and dangerous treats to self-governance and well-being. Why are they attacking and wounding our ability to function as vigilant, wise, humane members of our species? To make it easier for them to take wealth and power from us: to take our financial and well-being wealth, to take our supreme self-governance power.
They are also attacking and wounding our ability to think and act like Americans -- to think and act in accordance with the supreme law and generous humanity in our Constitution, to even know what our Law of Land and its American Values really are -- for the very same selfish motives.
Primordial urges for justice lie deep inside all of us and cannot be permanently deadened by those who try. To begin the long-overdue full maintenance and tune-up of our special American democracy, ignite moral disgust, moral outrage, and unity-and-cooperation -- just like the founders of our nation did in 1776 -- to end today's massive unfairness. Sections below provide explosive fuel for the healing civic fire.
Vital First Steps
In order to fix America, as a very first step We the People -- conservatives and liberals alike -- must wake up and realize who is subverting our self-governance and hurting our common good and how small and defeatable their group is, how and to what great extent that homeland enemy is stealthily assaulting our country and citizens from within, and why they are doing it.
To recover and build our civic power, so that we can fight the homeland enemy and win, We the People must rediscover and internalize core civic knowledge and core civic duty -- all in our Constitution -- that the homeland enemy has erased from our public education and public mind. Especially these two old civics lessons: How the Framers foresaw and feared a future homeland enemy -- a wealth-and-power enemy within destructive to America's principled self-governance and to the five classes of common well-being listed in the first sentence of our Constitution -- and wrote several homeland/national-security measures into our Constitution to prevent such a homeland enemy from ever being able to form inside America (two of those security measures are separation of powers and separation of church and state). How We the People, the government of America, have supreme power and supreme responsibility to defend America against such a homeland enemy.
As part of our patriotic wake-up call, we must come to understand how that small homeland enemy bred Islamic terrorism as a proxy US-military weapon in the 1980s with our tax dollars and in partnership with Saudi Arabia and then discarded their loaded weapon and let it spill out into the world. How and why they manufacture and exploit mass fear of terrorism and incite terrorism today. How and why they twisted the meaning of "national security" so that it no longer means "being free of danger and harm to our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being," a full national-security package that includes being safe from terrorism (today, "national security" means "safe from terrorism," period). How they have already breached our homeland/national security by overriding and violating all homeland/national-security measures woven into our Constitution, including by corrupting and weakening our democratic processes and representative governance -- and by weakening the ability of We the People to even perceive their unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power or sense the immense danger or defend our country against them. All so very shrewdly and skillfully America barely knows it. How they threaten our nation -- our democratic processes, our representative governance, our five classes of common well-being -- vastly more dangerously than terrorism.
To overcome the homeland enemy's manipulation of our public mind, including to surmount how they are dividing-and-conquering us, we must learn how the homeland enemy is "right wing" and not "conservative" or "liberal" -- how the moral character of right wing is rooted in wealth-and-power injustice, the type of injustice that set off the American Revolution, and how true conservatism and true liberalism are rooted in the law and humanity of our Constitution.
In order to stop the enemy, a vital first step is to define the enemy and expose the enemy for all of America to see. We defined the enemy of 1776 by naming who they were, by describing their lawless and immoral character, by listing their many injustices -- it fills more than half our Declaration of Independence -- and we celebrate that vital first step every Fourth of July. To stop America's worst enemy of today -- the out-of-control wealth-and-power homeland enemy that is subverting and hurting America -- and to restore and grow the principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being which they are rapidly removing as they busily take and hoard our wealth and power (our financial and well-being wealth and our supreme self-governance power), We the People in a rerun of our history must again gather resolve and unite, cooperate, and undertake that well-proven vital first step today.
1776 Again
Hidden by and assisted by a press that is supposed to help guard America's democracy and common good, unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power -- in our homeland -- is taking $2 trillion from us a year ($15,000 per taxpayer a year through a system of tax fleecing and corporate gouging that transfers wealth from the poor and middle class to the well off who don't need it and hoard it) and 50,000 of our lives a year (sixteen 9/11s a year due to cuts in healthcare affordability and cuts in food/drug/product/vehicle/workplace/environmental public safety). This theft and harm is one part of their wide-ranging stealthy mounting assault on America's principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being. Their goal, their inner drive, is an ancient one: take and hoard wealth and power at the expense of We the People and our posterity. A description of their character -- of the ancient wealth-and-power disease that has plagued humankind off and on for millennia, of the reason why We the People revolted in 1776 -- fills more than half our Declaration of Independence. They violate and override the entire redundant system of homeland/national-security measures the Framers wrote and wove into our Constitution to protect America against internal wealth-and-power assaults on our self-governance and common well-being.
Their assault on America began to flare up around 1980 when their wealth/corporate core, which includes Washington and the Republican/Democratic monopoly, added two partners to their wealth-and-power fusion -- a religious partner and a media partner. They recruited the Christian Right into their fold. The religion of the Christian Right, born-again Christian Zionism, is an inhumane brand of Christianity born a century after our Constitution was written. The wealth/corporate core and the Christian Right share a common desire to control and dominate others without concern for the inhumanity they inflict. Human suffering, inflicted here and abroad by the wealth/corporate core, harmonize with Christian-Right yearning for "end times:" the more intense and widespread the human suffering here and abroad, the quicker "end times" will come. That prophesied end of history, interpreted from the Book of Revelation, requires bloody Middle East conflict including for Israel to expand its borders. Simultaneously around 1980, the wealth/corporate core began to restructure America's entire mass media into their own media machine by merging advertising, public relations, journalism, and entertainment into "communication" serving wealth/corporate and Christian-Right interests, by removing the FCC's Fairness Doctrine and public-service requirements from broadcasting, and by relaxing the FCC's restrictions on media consolidation.
Beginning around 1980, it took them only twenty-five years to head us back toward the unjust type of America that existed before the first Fourth of July. Today only a few people -- a half-million in the fusion's wealth/corporate core (0.2% of the public including the White House, Congress, Judiciary, two major political parties, media owners) and 30 million in their Christian-Right core (a small but loud non-mainstream religion, 10% of the public) -- are rapidly taking wealth and power from the other 270 million people in our homeland (90% of the public). Due to the thick fog of deception and manipulation they continuously spread throughout America with their media machine, they are getting away with this massive lawbreaking and inhumanity. Unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine are harming us socially, economically, and bodily. They are subverting and hurting our government of, by, and for We the People back toward an unjust government of, by, and for Wealth and Power that sparked the dissent, declaration, and revolt we celebrate every Fourth of July.
Ancient human wisdom, early American history, the Declaration of Independence, and US Constitution all warn America to be vigilant and keep our members of wealth-and-power in careful check otherwise they will consolidate, flare up drunk with power devoid of social responsibility, and hurt our democracy and common good. But homeland wealth-and-power and their media machine erased all that vital understanding from America's public education, public mind, and public life; it was part of their softening-up assault on the homeland/national security of America's principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being, security that had to be breached to take our wealth and power. After they disabled our homeland/national security against American wealth-and-power -- including by weakening the natural and legal civic powers of We the People and by corrupting and debilitating our democratic processes and representative governance (all explained herein) -- it was easy for wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, mass-media power, and Christian-Right religious power to merge and grow into the unchecked political power that today is harming America, our posterity, and the world.
During the past quarter-century, that wealth-and-power fusion morphed our real American democracy into a market-based democracy of buyers and sellers of political products. The market works like this: Wealth/corporate and Christian-Right customers of the White House and Congress place orders (through the lobbying process) for laws and funds, domestic and foreign policies, and judicial appointments and court rulings that give them more wealth and power at the expense of everybody else. They pay for those political products with volumes of wealth/corporate campaign cash and a large bloc of Christian-Right votes that keep wealth-and-power in perpetual control of the White House, Congress, and Judiciary. Less-wealthy individuals, and cash-strapped groups each serving one tiny vital aspect of the public interest, simply cannot compete in our new market-based democracy. We lack the cash resources and voting-bloc size to buy from the White House and Congress equal "Justice" for all, "domestic Tranquility" needed for national unity and cooperation toward carrying out America's law and humanity, "the common defence" against enemies within who are freely taking our wealth and power and well-being, "the general Welfare" including equal access to healthcare and education for all, and "the Blessings of Liberty" including privacies and freedoms. And we no longer have a free press to pressure the White House and Congress (elected representatives responsible to We the People and our posterity) to behave Constitutionally (lawfully and morally) as a White House and Congress really should. Red and blue, and the media, all participate in this immense, escalating, subversion and harm of America.
Today they are adding homeland police-state power and more global intelligence/military power to their wealth-and-power fusion. Their unchecked power is beginning to grow into fascism.
They are driven by wealth/corporate interests (take and hoard wealth and power at the expense of others) and Christian-Right interests (force inhumane religious dogma and inhumane laws on others). Those selfish interests are directly at odds with the public interest and national interest specified in our Constitution (We the People undertake lawful-and-humane self-governance that provides five classes of common well-being to ourselves and our posterity, the legal and moral bedrock of our "more perfect Union" that frees us to pursue opportunity and fortune and happiness as individuals).
Systematically and stealthily, consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine are cracking and crumbling the bedrock of our "more perfect Union" in order to extract and hoard our wealth and power. Which is why opportunity and fortune and happiness are in such decline for most Americans today.
They have already made certain that our standard methods of democracy -- reading and watching the news to stay informed, supporting just causes, working on vital civic issues, whistleblowing in the public interest, engaging in principled dissent, writing to our Senators and Congressman, voting red or blue -- cannot possibly stop them from taking more and more of our wealth and our power, even if every citizen votes in every election. Because they have already replaced the real American democracy embodied in our Constitution with a rigged free-market democracy where wealth-and-power, red flavor or blue flavor, always wins.
What can We the People do about it? Plenty. Resurrect and unleash our natural civic power and our legal civic power. That is, rediscover and build up and wield our entire arsenal of civic power that consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine are stealthily weakening within America and removing from America:
Resurrect and unleash our Deep Natural Urges For Justice. Feel and voice moral disgust and moral outrage, primordial survival emotion of our species, and then act on it en masse.
Resurrect and unleash our Innate Social Action For Justice. Unite and cooperate to end unfairness and mistreatment, primordial survival behavior of our species, and to create common good.
Resurrect and apply our Ancient Wisdom Of Humankind:
Restore and exercise respect, responsibility, cooperation, and critical thinking. These are ancient survival skills of our species, core human attributes of We the People, and bare-basic social/emotional/intellectual requirements for representatives and leaders of We the People. If you don't have these core wisdom-and-humanity skills within you by the time you reach physical adulthood, you won't have the moral literacy and intellectual ability -- the core human capacity -- to fathom or want to further the supreme law and secular morality in our Constitution. All four skills were listed as human-development goals on grade-school report cards (such as on our daughters') before wealth-and-power pressured and influenced their removal in the early 1980s. (Besides purging these skills of good citizenship from America in multiple ways, wealth-and-power and their media machine are purging knowledge and understanding of good citizenship from America in order to weaken homeland/national security and take control of America.)
Keep the members of wealth-and-power politically separated and in careful check otherwise they will consolidate, rage out of control, and harm you and your nation. The Framers wove this wisdom deeply into our Constitution to create a redundant system of homeland/national-security protections against out-of-control wealth-and-power. They entrusted the future public trust -- White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, free press (mass media) -- to guard and foster this vital homeland security of our democratic processes, representative governance, and five classes of common well-being. (Wealth-and-power and their media machine erased this Civics-101 lesson from America, and many others also, in order to take our wealth and power to grow their wealth and power.)
Resurrect and apply our Early American History. Voice moral disgust and moral outrage against, unite and cooperate against, and revolt against government of, by, and for Wealth and Power.
Dust off, read, and apply our Declaration of Independence. Describe the immoral character of the wealth-and-power enemy and list their many injustices (which takes up more than half of our most cherished Charter of Freedom!) and declare national resolve to get out from under irresponsible wealth-and-power and the harm they inflict and to have government of, by, and for We the People instead.
Dust off, read, and wield our US Constitution. Carry out its morality and law, that is, carry out principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being to ourselves and our posterity. "We, the People" -- the government of America -- have supreme power and supreme responsibility to "provide for the common defence" against consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine, and to fulfill the rest of our Constitution as well.
Begin by repeating a key part of early American history. Create a modern version of the original Continental Congress to unite citizen forces ("United We Stand, Divided We Fall"), to build citizen forces, and to direct citizen forces to fight the consolidated wealth-and-power and media machine who are subverting and hurting America. This broad-based national civic-action coalition, operating outside the influence of Washington D.C. for the purpose of homeland/national defense against the right, would germinate a new political party that could rapidly bloom, resoundingly win against reds and blues, and restore principled self-governance and bountiful common good to America.
From inside our homeland they breached America's security -- the security of our democratic processes, representative governance, and five classes of common well-being.
Frightening evidence of the breach: Can you recite and explain the five classes of American Common-Good Benefits, listed in the first sentence of our Constitution since 1787, that We the People have supreme power and supreme responsibility to provide to ourselves and our posterity? Like most citizens today, probably not. Because during their softening-up assaults on our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being, consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine erased all those benefits -- along with the rest of the essence of real American democracy -- from our public education and public mind. We no longer know what to be vigilant for -- the whole point -- as they busily take our wealth and our power: our financial and well-being wealth, our supreme self-governance power.
Beginning on July 4, 1776, We the People united, cooperated, and won against wealth-and-power to create America. Beginning today we could unite, cooperate, and win against wealth-and-power to fix America.
A vital first step? Wake up and see, and resolutely overcome, the divide-and-conquer manipulations -- designed by wealth-and-power and administered by their media machine -- that undermine the ability of We the People to unite and cooperate to self-govern America and provide the five classes of common well-being to ourselves and our posterity in accordance with our Constitution. The homeland enemy's manipulations divide us -- into conservatives and liberals (whose common enemy is the "right wing" hurting both), into several dozen demographic groups, into hundreds of subcategories under that -- and sway and play us to compete and fight against each other for attention and success in the new democratic marketplace, a "free-market" democracy heavily rigged so that wealth-and-power wins every time as long as they keep We the People divided and powerless. They divide us to prevent us from defending America against them. They divide us to conquer us by taking our financial wealth, our well-being wealth, and our supreme self-governance power. The homeland enemy (a secular 0.2% and religious 10% of the public), like the enemy of 1776, wants "Divided We Fall." We the People (90% of the public), like the citizens of 1776, need "United We Stand."
The conclusion of this document outlines a four-element plan to achieve our common dream -- a long-overdue full maintenance and tune-up, American Revolution II, of the real American democracy we won in American Revolution I.
Reap The Immense Rewards
In return for our efforts made and taxes paid during our principled self-governance of America, We the People receive bountiful common well-being -- five different kinds of common-good benefits. That is the social contract embodied in our Constitution, the duty and price and reward of good citizenship. It is government of, by, and for We the People.
America is a "republic." In a republic, supreme power lies in citizens who elect representatives responsible to them.
We the People, the supreme power in America, are the government of America. We hire with elections, and pay with our taxes, representatives who are responsible to us and to the law and humanity in our Constitution: a White House and Congress who create a Judiciary including the Supreme Court. They are America's key public employees dedicated to serving the public interest spelled out in our Constitution (the principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being summarized a few paragraphs below), and We the People are their employers who vigilantly watch over them and direct them and hold them accountable. They are not the "government." We the People are. They do not have "supreme power." We the People do. We have so much power that we, and our Constitution, can remove and replace nearly all the judges on the Supreme Court (see the conclusion).
In this document, "principled" means "acting in accordance with our Constitution's law and humanity both in technicality and spirit."
Our principled self-governance requires a public trust: A principled mass media (including an open and honest free press) to assure truly democratic processes. And principled elected-and-appointed representatives (made possible by a principled mass media, and its offshoot, truly democratic processes) to assure truly representative governance.
If America doesn't have a principled mass media, then America can't possibly have truly democratic processes. Or truly representative governance. Or the full set of US-Constitution benefits summarized in the two paragraphs right below.
Individuals and corporations and even religions have plenty of leeway to pursue opportunity, fortune, and happiness as they please -- as long as their actions do not in any way endanger or harm America's democratic processes, representative governance, and five classes of common well-being. Besides not endangering that principled self-governance and bountiful common good, our Constitution requires everyone in America to help foster it. Our freedom for all, the American Dream for all, requires active social responsibility by all -- especially by our public trust.
How immense are the common-good benefits that We the People provide to ourselves and our posterity through democratic processes, representative governance, and vigilant active good citizenship made possible by a principled mass media that keeps us fully and honestly informed? Dust off and read the first sentence of our Constitution written in 1787: We the People [1] establish equal justice for all, [2] insure domestic tranquility and thus the unity-and-cooperation needed for America to be united (as in "United" States of America) toward living up to the law and humanity in our Constitution, [3] provide for the common defense and homeland/national security including against threats from within, [4] promote the general welfare of several kinds including education and health and social/economic/bodily safety, and [5] secure the blessings of liberty including our privacies and rights and freedoms to pursue opportunity and fortune and happiness. This is in the very first sentence of our "supreme Law of the Land."
Study and compare those Five Commandments of America with the Ten Commandments. Note how the Five Commandments of America call upon We the People -- especially our public trust -- to provide far more goodness to America, and to our posterity, than the Ten Commandments do.
Obviously the founders of our republic had a positive, bright, uplifting view of Human Nature: People are naturally good, not bad, and are innately capable of self-governing our "more perfect Union" to furnish plenty more goodness than merely "Liberty and Justice for all" -- including plenty more safety than being free from terrorism (terrorism is a minor threat compared to the far deadlier threat, America's wealth-and-power disease, being hidden from the public today).
Our social contract -- government of, by, and for We the People -- works beautifully. As long as our public trust remains trustworthy.
Today our public trust is violating our trust. Our social contract is under mounting assault by those in whom we are taught and told to place our trust. Today's White House, Congress, Judiciary, the two major political parties, and our news-and-entertainment mass media, working as a team, more and more are serving wealth/corporate clients and Christian-Right clients at the expense of We the People and our posterity. Their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients, who formed a political alliance a quarter-century ago, share a frightening common ground: hunger for power and control over others, contempt for and action against law and humanity in our Constitution, proclivity for and shrewdness at deceiving the public. That wealth and power began to consolidate into an illegal, unchecked political force around 1980. Similar to the flare-ups of consolidated wealth-and-power that have occurred off-and-on throughout the ages, they -- our corrupted public trust and their wealth/corporate/religious clients -- are taking our wealth (the financial wealth and well-being wealth of We the People) and our power (the supreme power and self-governance of We the People) without remorse for the wrong and harm they inflict.
America is unaware. Their media machine spins and hides their dangerous growing fusion of wealth-and-power and their subversion and harm. They prevent vigilant free speech -- especially journalism, whistleblowing, and dissent -- from sounding homeland/national-security alarms about their assault on America's democratic processes, representative governance, and all five classes of common well-being.
Unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power -- a virulent new strain of the same political disease the founders of America understood and feared, described at length in our Declaration of Independence with heated words of dissent, and inoculated America against with many supreme-law measures in our Constitution -- today is disabling our ability to govern, taking our tax money, robbing our common-good benefits, as it converts our government of, by, and for We the People (our type of government after the American Revolution) into a government of, by, and for Wealth and Power (the type of government before the American Revolution that we disliked so much we revolted against it: the true meaning of our Flag).
Suppose We the People -- the rightful government of America and supreme power in America -- undertake resolute national-defense effort ("We, the People... provide for the common defence") and pay a small tax to fight the disease and restore our nation back to lawful and humane political health. That is, suppose we carry out American Revolution II and steer our ship-of-state back to the principled Secular Humanistic Republic born in American Revolution I.
What's in it for us financially? By eliminating today's $2-trillion-a-year tax fleecing and corporate gouging by the wealth-and-power disease (theft hidden from America by the disease's media machine), each and every taxpayer would save $15,000 a year on the average. It would cost $50 per taxpayer a year, for 100% public financing of political campaigns, a 300-to-1 return on investment (not nearly as profitable as the payoff rate on many campaign contributions today, which would all be eliminated).
How would we come out ahead in matters of life and death? By stopping today's collateral damage on citizens by the wealth-and-power disease (wrongful death hidden from America by the disease's media machine), we would save at least 50,000 lives in our homeland annually, a small city's worth of lives every year, more than sixteen 9/11s a year. This massive saving of life would be another return on that same $50-a-year investment.

Those would be just two of the many immense rewards if We the People unite (as in "United" States of America) and cooperate (conservatives and liberals working as a huge powerful team against the small right-wing enemy within that's similar to the enemy of 1776) to return our nation to the law and humanity in our Constitution.
How? Do what we did before. Create a modern version of the 1776 Continental Congress to unite, build, and direct citizen forces to fight the wealth-and-power disease the Framers foresaw, feared, and tried hard to prevent from ever flaring up in our homeland. The broad-based citizen congress would complete and certify the above lists of theft and wrongful death and bring them to the attention of the entire American public in a new version of the Declaration of Independence. That's a portion of Element 1 in the four-element plan herein.
The goal? To again have a public trust -- a White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, and media -- that the public can trust.
Those In Whom We Place Our Trust Have Breached Our Homeland/National Security
Around 1980 a virulent new strain of the ancient wealth-and-power disease began to flare up in our homeland, a homeland/national-security threat the Framers foresaw and feared in 1787 and tried to protect their future America from.
After stealthily growing in strength for a quarter-century inside our homeland, today the disease is savaging America's law and humanity, freely attacking and hurting America's principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being.
Although the disease disguises and hides itself well including much of the harm it inflicts, Americans are feeling the pain. So will our posterity. So do people in other nations. So do Nature and Earth.
More than half of our Declaration of Independence -- in fiery language of dissent -- describes the lawless and inhumane character of the wealth-and-power disease, the 1776 strain and today's strain.
The founders of our republic understood the character and peril of the wealth-and-power disease. So they inoculated America with a cocktail of security protections written into our Constitution. Two of them are separation of powers and separation of church and state.
Perhaps the Framers could not foresee what makes today's homeland strain of the wealth-and-power disease so extremely dangerous compared to the 1776 British strain. Around 1980 America's wealth/corporate/central-government/political-party consolidation (same consolidation as in 1776 Britain) teamed up with an inhumane new brand of Christianity that emerged in the late 1800s a century after the birth of America, the religion of today's Christian Right, then recruited America's media to switch allegiance and restructure itself to serve and protect their growing fusion of wealth-and-power.
Add police-state militarism to the central-government component, replace Christian-Right with Anti-Semitism, and you have the strain that infected Nazi Germany.
Unlike our media of 1776, which exposed and fought the disease, our media of today spins and hides the disease, which spreads and worsens the disease and the wrong and harm it inflicts.
Unlike the mainstream Christianity of America's founders, unlike the mainstream Christianity in today's America, the Christian Right condones and fosters the disease and its unlawfulness and inhumanity, all from behind a media-maintained cloak of goodness. For example, from behind the Ten Commandments they help the wealth-and-power disease wage a mounting assault on the Five Commandments of America -- the five-point secular-moral code in the first sentence of our Constitution, our five core American values -- that call upon We the People to provide far more goodness to America and to our posterity than the Ten Commandments do.
Stemming from a resolute stealthy campaign of wealth-and-power acquisition launched around 1980 by America's consolidating wealth-and-power, a campaign they supercharged by recruiting an inhumane religion and forming an accomplice press to aid and abet them, that new strain of the disease recently broke through our Constitution's system of several homeland/national-security barriers that the Framers erected to protect America from out-of-control wealth-and-power within.
But America is barely aware of that breach of homeland/national security. Because during quarter-century lead-up to the breach the disease stealthily neutralized America's vigilance, so completely that America lost knowledge and understanding of homeland/national security and the dangerous threat from within the founders of our country feared. From America's awareness, the disease erased its lawless and inhumane character, and its danger to the common good, described at length in our Declaration of Independence. From America's awareness, the disease erased the several homeland-security measures the Framers wrote into our Constitution to ward off unchecked wealth-and-power and the harm it inflicts. From America's awareness, the disease erased the meaning of national security: being secure from threats to our democratic processes, being secure from threats to our representative governance, being secure from threats to our five classes of common well-being listed in the first sentence of our Constitution. All components of the disease -- wealth/corporate, central-government, political-party, inhumane-religion, mass-media -- symbiotically cooperated to erase homeland/national-security vigilance from America's public education and public mind (as successfully as they erased the five core American values from our nation). After seeing to it that America no longer knows about the existence or character or peril of unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power, or about our Constitution's system of protections against that peril from within, or about what homeland security and national security really are, the disease then breached America's homeland/national security with utter ease.
As a result of the security breach, our democracy of today -- corruptibly altered by the disease from the old form into a new form that is weak against the disease, into a democracy where We the People no longer know or understand that we are the government of America with supreme power and supreme responsibility to carry out our Constitution through representatives we carefully select and hire, into a market-based democracy of selling and buying political products that bears little resemblance to the principled democracy in our Constitution, into an unprincipled majority-is-right democracy with heavily-rigged democratic processes that assure vitality and growth of the wealth-and-power disease -- cannot possibly stop the disease or the mounting harm it inflicts here and abroad.
Like a political form of HIV/AIDS, the disease is weakening and shutting down our real-American-democracy defenses against unchecked wealth-and-power and the harm it inflicts. Like a wasting cancer, the disease is breaking down and eroding away our democratic processes and representative governance and five classes of common well-being. Like a hungry cancer, the disease is draining social/economic/bodily common well-being from America and sapping citizen hope and spirit from America as it satisfies its appetite for more and more of our wealth and our power.
Herein is a cure based on our natural survival emotion and behavior, ancient wisdom of humankind, early American history, Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. A four-element plan to administer the potent, surefire cure is outlined in the conclusion.
America's Betrayers
America's unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power -- dangerously out-of-control, growing stronger and more unstoppable day by day -- consists of a tiny wealth/corporate core aided and abetted by the White House and Congress and Judiciary, the red/blue political monopoly, an inhumane new brand of Christianity born a century ago, and a media that reversed its allegiance. Stealthily as a team they are subverting and hurting America, violating law and humanity in our Constitution. It began around 1980. They are the homeland enemy, the enemy within, a security threat the Framers foresaw and feared and tried to protect America from.
Their media machine hides their betrayal:
They, the homeland enemy, are attacking and wounding our democratic processes and representative governance. They've made sure that virtually all media information, and nearly all democratic choices on the ballot, side with consolidated wealth-and-power. Free speech including whistleblowing and dissent, advocating adherence to law and humanity in our Constitution, are squelched. Even by today's Supreme Court. But free speech that favors wealth-and-power, and spins and hides subversion and harm committed by wealth-and-power, is allowed and fostered. Both major political parties service consolidated wealth-and-power, blues slightly less so than reds. That red/blue political monopoly fights off all threats to their consolidated-wealth-and-power rule. During the entire election process, from campaign kick-offs to final tallies, many underhanded activities take place in the background to tilt election outcomes toward red. The winners, upon reaching office as representatives responsible to We the People and our Constitution, barely listen to We the People or follow our Constitution. Instead they service their clients, a half-million wealth/corporate clients (who pay with cash) and 30 million Christian-Right clients (who pay with votes), at the social/economic/bodily expense of 270 million We the People, which violates our Constitution. They've made sure that reading and watching the news to stay informed, voting in every election, and writing to our Senators and Congressman don't work anymore.
They are attacking and wounding "Justice." It is no longer equal. Or for all. More and more, wealthy-and-powerful major offenders get away with it. Poor-and-powerless minor offenders, committing desperate acts of survival in response to social and economic breakdown caused by irresponsible acts of consolidated wealth-and-power, are being trapped by tough-on-crime laws that target the poor and the powerless and are put into taxpayer-funded privatized prisons that earn money for wealth-and-power. Nearly everyone behind bars in America is poor and powerless. Among nations that keep statistics, most do, America has the highest per-capita incarceration rate of all. If Texas were a nation it would top the list.
They are attacking and wounding "domestic Tranquility." Using a variety of divide-and-conquer tactics executed by their media machine, they divided us up -- and pitted us against each other -- so that We the People can't unite and cooperate to protect and preserve America and carry out our Constitution (which would break up and wrest control from consolidated wealth-and-power).
They are attacking and wounding "the common defence." They weakened our national security against threats from outside. Their Iraq venture, a big winner for their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients no matter which way the war turns (explained herein), is fueling international terrorism which threatens America. Their other unfair foreign policies and their unjust international trade policies, hidden from America under pretenses that show humane intent, are also fomenting backlash at America. They have already breached our homeland/national security against threats from within, and are freely attacking and wounding our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being at a faster and faster pace.
They are attacking and wounding "the general Welfare." As they take and hoard our wealth and our power to benefit their tiny group, they assault the social/economic/bodily well-being of the vast majority. Education. Opportunity. Healthcare. Consumer protection. Retirement. Public/workplace/environmental safety. And far more (write in all the other general-welfare categories you see them assaulting: ______, ______, ______, ...). Increasingly unfair taxation, and corporate gouging and fraud, are transferring our wealth up to them at a faster and faster rate (explained herein). The resulting financial harm and bodily harm to our citizens, kept hidden from the public by their media machine, is staggering (explained herein). The list of their damage to the general welfare is long and horrifying.
They are attacking and wounding "Liberty." In their quest for more and more control over us, they are taking away our freedoms and privacies. Especially our freedom to voice alarms about how consolidated wealth-and-power, and their media machine, have breached our security from within and are violating our Law of the Land to the core.
They are attacking and wounding separation of powers and separation of church and state, two of the security measures the Framers devised to protect today's America from out-of-control wealth-and-power (the other measures are explained herein). The federal executive, legislative, and judicial branches are fusing into a single federal power that serves wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients at the expense of We the People and our posterity. Instead of carrying out the law and humanity in our Constitution, more and more they are carrying out the wealth-grabbing and power-grabbing goals of their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients while cloaking their actions as lawful and humane.
The homeland enemy has succeeded perhaps beyond their wildest dreams. For all practical purposes, they have subverted our government of, by, and for We the People into a government of, by, and for wealth-and-power -- back to the same unjust type of government that set off the American Revolution.
(To fix America, We the People could apply a strategy that made America. We could unite and cooperate, form a new version of the Continental Congress to build and direct citizen forces against the enemy, complete this list of injustices committed by the enemy, include it in a new version of the Declaration of Independence the new congress and its civic forces would distribute nationwide, which -- with 100% certainty -- would launch a long-overdue full maintenance and tune-up of the real American democracy defined by our Constitution.)
They bend our public mind to their will. And trick us to go along with their betrayal. Even to assist their betrayal.
How do they persuade Americans by the millions to support and help them take more and more wealth-and-power from America, and from the world, without concern for wrong they commit or harm they inflict? By hiding and spinning truth that would hurt their efforts. By fabricating falsehoods to aid their efforts. By manufacturing, promoting, and exploiting fear. By carrying out numerous divide-and-conquer manipulations against the public, to prevent us from uniting-and-cooperating to defend our country against them. By morphing America's values, from values that drive principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being, toward values that drive the unjust taking of wealth and power from others. By twisting public understanding of our Constitution, including power and responsibility of the President and citizens, in a way that strengthens homeland-enemy power and weakens citizen power (as explained in our Constitution, the overriding duty of We the People -- and the President we hire -- is to resolutely halt and fix the immense betrayals listed above). By stealthily removing the basic concept of real American democracy (We the People provide principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being to ourselves and our posterity) from America. By displaying public faces of righteousness and goodness -- patriotism, unity, homeland/national security, piety, human warmth, homeland and family values, integrity, morality -- to cloak their unlawfulness and inhumanity. Their news-and-entertainment media machine executes the persuasion.
The betrayers -- unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power, their media machine, and tragically the millions of citizens and many institutions (including education) they skillfully tricked to assist them without even knowing it -- are busily subverting and hurting America. Including by wounding the ability of We the People (the government of America and supreme power in America) to provide democratic processes, representative governance, and the five classes of common well-being to ourselves and our posterity.
A simple test reveals the depth and danger of their betrayal: As a patriotic good American citizen can you recite -- and explain the essence of -- the five secular-moral responsibilities of We the People, the Five Commandments of America, listed in the first sentence of our Constitution since 1787?
The recitation they purged: "We, the People... [1] establish Justice, [2] insure domestic Tranquility, [3] provide for the common defence, [4] promote the general Welfare, and [5] secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." The explanations they purged, basic understanding of [1]-[5], are summarized herein.
Our Constitution's Article 6 explains how that five-point moral code is "supreme Law of the Land." All citizens are bound to live up to it. Especially our executive/legislative/judicial representatives, who we select and hire (through democratic processes) to carry out our Constitution including its moral code (through representative governance). When they take office, they solemnly vow to uphold America's law and humanity to serve We the People. After they take office they break their oath, and violate our law and humanity to serve wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients instead.
They stealthily erased core understanding of our Constitution, including the supreme duties of We the People, from America. It was one of their softening-up assaults on the homeland/national security of America -- an assault on our security against wealth-and-power threats from within -- an ancient type of danger the founders of our country knew and feared, and tried to protect the future America from with the multiple Law-of-the-Land defenses (explained herein) they wrote into our Constitution.
Connect the dots to draw the picture: The people in whom we place our trust are taking our wealth and our power, to build up their wealth-and-power so they can take even more wealth and power from us and our posterity. They're also doing it to the rest of the world as much as they can. In the process, they break US law and international law and hurt people here and abroad.
It's all about Values, they repeat over and over in the media. It's all For A Better And Safer America, they assure us. They deceive and manipulate with great effect. We bless their 'good' hearts and support their 'good' works.
They broke though America's security -- from the inside -- and now they freely assault our democratic processes, representative governance, and all five classes of common well-being. In a vast and dangerous betrayal.
Subversion and Harm to Halt and Fix
Most Americans -- even those who read and watch all the news -- through no fault of their own are not aware of the immense subversion and harm inflicted on our country and citizens with great skill and stealth by those in whom we place our trust. Or how it also imperils the world and our future. Or how it is escalating.
Many citizens are alarmed by the wrong and harm they see growing in America today, wrong and harm committed by those at the top who set dangerous examples for the rest of America including our youth to follow. They see only part of the problem; only scattered bits and pieces of the overall problem ever appear in the news. A strengthening political force, rapidly consolidating wealth-and-power, is preventing America from clearly seeing the big-picture problem: the wrong and harm is a political cancer spreading down into America from a dangerous wealth-and-power top that America isn't supposed to have after winning the American Revolution. The bulk of the wrong and harm, the worst of the wrong and harm, and the full identity of those who commit the wrong and harm are hidden from the public by today's press.
Many concerned groups mobilize and try to stop some of the wrong and harm, with a patchwork of partial fixes, in disorganized reaction to chess-like moves by well-organized power playing them, each group working separately on their issue and in competition with other groups for public attention and support. As a whole they are not effective, not even at slowing the growth of wrong and harm committed by those in whom we place our trust, because their efforts -- like all civic efforts toward the public interest today -- are under broad subversive assault. A strengthening political group, rapidly consolidating wealth-and-power assisted by their media machine, is preventing America from uniting and cooperating to plan and launch and carry out the full solution (to the big-picture problem) called for by our Constitution.
America's unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine -- summarized in the section above, the homeland enemy, the enemy within -- gradually over the past quarter-century manipulatively blinded America to consolidated wealth-and-power and its danger, a danger the founders of America foresaw and feared and wisely addressed when they wrote our Constitution.
In addition, they manipulatively deadened the spirit of our Declaration of Independence, the spirit of America: wield mass moral outrage, vigorous dissent, and broad and strong unity-and-cooperation against massive wrong to bring right. All three of those well-proven ways of fighting and reversing injustice, injustice committed by those in high places, have been systematically weakened by those in high places using today's powerful weapon of media-machine persuasion. Today, moral outrage is "negative." Dissent is "terrorism." Unity-and-cooperation toward the common good, natural survival behavior of our species, is becoming uncool strange endeavor to be avoided and rejected in favor of division (into several dozen demographic groups and into hundreds of subcategories under that) and competition (among each other for influence and success in our new "free-market" democracy that has replaced our "American" democracy) and thus to be easily conquerable and plunderable by a consolidated force of injustice that singles out and neutralizes each separate and weak fragment of civic power at will, the whole point of the manipulation.
(Why not re-ignite the spirit of America, like the Declaration of Independence set it off in 1776.)
As skillfully and thoroughly, they corrupted and purged America's public understanding of the US Constitution. For example, America no longer knows how "national security" means the security of the self-governance and secular-moral basis of our "more perfect Union," that is, the security our democratic processes and representative governance and the security of our five classes of common well-being (listed one-to-five in the first sentence of our Constitution). Or how "national security" means the security of everyone's freedom to pursue opportunity, fortune, and happiness within that bright open framework of real American democracy. Or how the supreme purpose of freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, is to vigilantly protect and preserve that total national security. Today, "national security" means being safe from terrorism, period. It no longer means being safe from subversion and harm to our democratic processes, representative governance, and five classes of common well-being (which includes being safe from terrorism). Being safe from terrorism is just one of the many items in the big national-security package. Terrorism took 3,000 lives in 2001. But unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power takes more than 50,000 lives in our homeland every year, the annual collateral damage from just a few of their several kinds of assaults on our entire national security.
By blinding America to consolidated wealth-and-power and its danger, by deadening our American spirit, by corrupting-and-purging our understanding of real American democracy -- all of which incapacitated our "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty" -- they attacked America's security against wealth-and-power threats from within, overrode the several Constitutional defenses the Framers erected to guard us against out-of-control wealth-and-power, and ultimately weakened the ability of We the People to govern and protect and preserve America. All very much on purpose. Similar to how a military softens up defenses of a nation before proceeding with conquest and plunder, they softened up America's defenses with deception, manipulation, and subversion over the past quarter-century to make it really easy for consolidated wealth-and-power to take and hoard more and more wealth-and-power at the social, economic, and bodily expense of We the People and our posterity.
Now they even do it with Homeland Security, created and run by the homeland enemy, by growing a huge taxpayer-funded War-on-Terror industry to extract more of our wealth and by manufacturing/exploiting fear of terrorism to neutralize civic responsibility and civic power that could halt their subversion and harm of America. "We, the People... provide for the common defence" including for homeland security, directs our Constitution. But Homeland Security handicaps the ability of We the People to provide homeland security against dangerous wealth-and-power threats from within.
They subverted our democratic processes and representative governance, they harmed our five classes of common well-being, and today they are accelerating their takeover and taking. They morphed our system of government -- from government of, by, and for We the People -- into government of, by, and for wealth-and-power where our citizens and posterity and national assets lose and the members of wealth-and-power, a small number of people, gain.
To help bring about their subversive heist of our wealth and power, they formed a two-party political monopoly which caters to wealth-and-power and blocks political threats to wealth-and-power. With generous help from the press they deflect, neuter, or crush all candidates, political parties, issues, and truth that would serve the public interest -- America's national interest -- by vitalizing our A] democratic processes (all of them), B] representative governance (to achieve genuine We-the-People representation), and C] the five classes of common well-being (equal justice for all, broad and strong national unity-and-cooperation to live up to the law and humanity in our Constitution, national defense and national security especially against threats from within which would also reduce and prevent threats from without, several kinds of general welfare including education and health, liberty including our privacies and freedoms, for ourselves and our posterity) -- which, in the eyes of the two-party monopoly, are grave threats because they would thwart ambitions of the wealth-and-power clients they represent and service.
(Those A-B-C 'threats' to reds and blues and their clients -- threats from the law and humanity our Constitution! -- could be a hugely-appealing A-B-C platform for a broad-based new political party that could win against reds and blues and return We the People to power and our Constitution back into a living document. Sections below explain a financial benefit [save $2 trillion annually, an average of $15,000 per conservative/liberal taxpayer a year] and a safety benefit [prevent at least 50,000 conservative/liberal deaths a year] by subduing today's ravages of out-of-control right-wing wealth-and-power. Those two benefits -- of resolute good citizenship against the right-wing wealth-and-power threat -- are possible planks for a general-welfare sub-platform which could help grow the new party from scratch, from a broad base of conservatives and liberals being hurt by reds and blues, into super-majority size and landslide victories over reds and blues.)
Their advertising/PR/news/entertainment media machine relentlessly injects wealth-and-power influence into our public mind and corrodes our nation's values: from the wise and humane American values in our Constitution toward the avarice and rapacity that drive consolidated wealth-and-power. By breaking down our humanity they break supreme law: the five-point secular moral system spelled out in our Constitution's first sentence -- our moral bedrock, our national humanity, our true American values -- is "supreme Law of the Land" (US Constitution, Article 6).
Their clandestine assaults on our Constitution's law and humanity, which began by warping and erasing public understanding of our Constitution's law and humanity, have deeply wounded America into acting completely out of character: to hurt our own country and citizens with unfair and inhumane laws and regulations and domestic policies; to hurt other countries and their people with inhumane foreign policies, unfair trade practices, extortive diplomacy, covert interference to destabilize political order and overthrow democracies, military force even against infrastructure and food/water supplies and civilians, all to satisfy desires of American wealth-and-power; to hurt Nature and Earth; to be like the enemy of 1776. Repercussions from abroad additionally harm America.
Unless We the People rediscover the true meaning and purpose of America, and reclaim our supreme power and take back control and stewardship, the ravages of out-of-control American wealth-and-power will intensify here and abroad -- more rapidly with reds in power, less rapidly with blues in power.
(Since wealth-and-power and their two-party monopoly have already made sure that our standard political methods cannot possibly stop them, why not adopt and execute the surefire powerful ways of the past, fully backed by law and spirit in our Charters of Freedom, as explained herein.)
What makes the enemy within so extremely dangerous? Their religious symbiont: an inhumane strain of Christianity that emerged in the late 1800s, born-again Christian Zionism, a religion far different from humane mainstream Christianity including evangelical Christianity (I was an evangelical-Christian alter boy so I know this firsthand). That religion of today's Christian Right, aggressively at odds with law and humanity in our Constitution, was not the Christianity of America's founders. Why is the Christian Right so at odds with our country's law and humanity? Because for America to fully live it would thwart quick attainment of the "end times" the Christian Right yearns for. Besides damaging America's bedrock law and humanity, the small but aggressive Christian Right is infecting our nation's mainstream Christianity.
What else makes the homeland enemy so extremely dangerous? Their media machine. Beginning around 1980, consolidated wealth-and-power combined advertising, public relations, journalism, and entertainment into "communication." Today journalists must serve the wealth-and-power interests of their communication-corporation owners and clients, not the public interest, or else they get pilloried and fired. At the same time they created the "communication" industry and "communication" degree programs at universities, the wealth-and-power fusion stripped the FCC's Fairness Doctrine and public-service requirements from broadcasting, which gave rise to radical-right religious broadcasting and right-wing hate broadcasting. Also, they removed the FCC's restrictions on media consolidation, then merged broadcasting stations and other types of media companies into a few giant media corporations, which conglomerated with other corporations that sell a wide range of products and services, who in symbiosis with the rest of the wealth/power fusion control America's media content to their liking including the news. Today all forms of mass media -- print, radio, television, film, news, entertainment, corporate-owned, public-owned -- operate as a giant right-wing persuasion machine. Aided by their ruse of being liberal media.
In a stunning reversal of allegiance since we defeated the wealth-and-power enemy of 1776 -- the enemy described with fiery language of dissent in our Declaration of Independence for all to see, an enemy remarkably similar to the wealth-and-power enemy within of today -- our press, instead of protecting and serving America like before, today protects and serves the enemy and hides and aids their inhumane, unlawful designs and misdeeds.
(Be vigilant and savvy. Look out for and see through the media's deceptions and manipulations. How they hide today's unlawful-and-inhumane right wing behind the lawful-and-humane "conservatism" of America's founders. How they spin the Christian Right into "evangelical Christianity." How they twist "liberalism," the five moral duties of America listed in the first sentence of our Constitution, liberal humanity that is "supreme Law of the Land," into something wrong and bad. How they pit conservatives against liberals, and vice versa, to help the right wing (hurting conservatives and liberals) to divide-and-conquer America. How they cloak their allegiance to the right wing by referring to themselves as the "Liberal Media.")
They also spin-and-hide how the enemy is small and easily defeatable.
We can halt and fix that subversion and harm.
(Merely do what worked so well in the past. Form a new version of the Continental Congress -- a civic-action congress representing the more than 200 million conservatives and liberals, the huge majority, currently being hurt by the small right-wing minority -- that would unite, built, and direct citizen forces against America's new enemy. To kick off the patriotic halt-and-fix of the enemy's subversion and harm, the new congress would issue a new version of the Declaration of Independence that would describe the enemy, list the enemy's injustices and exactly how they violated our Constitution in technicality and spirit, and declare resolve to neutralize the enemy and return America to the law and humanity in our Constitution. A spin-off? A new political party devoted to fulfilling the new declaration.)
The goal is to again have a public trust -- a White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, and media -- that the public can trust to serve our country instead of servicing wealth-and-power.
Who would benefit? We the People, conservatives and liberals alike, including our corporations and religions and media. Our posterity. The world's other nations and citizens. As well as Nature and Earth.
The Disease and Cure
Off and on in cycles throughout the ages, wealth-and-power flared up out of dormancy and consolidated, selfishly took and hoarded wealth-and-power -- and in the process inflicted harm on its own people and often beyond its own borders -- then self-inflicted itself back into dormancy or got forced back into dormancy by revolt or war from its victims. Over the ages, humankind learned how to prevent, control, and neutralize the harmful wealth-and-power disease; the key is to spread and share wealth-and-power, to prevent dangerous consolidation and taking and hoarding of wealth-and-power by small groups, in order to assure survival of the individual, family, community, and thus our species. Our forebears infused this core survival wisdom into human development, morality, and law. Much of it trickled down through the ages into our Declaration of Independence, US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Today, science is discovering our powerful genetic defenses against the wealth-and-power disease.
The Framers understood and feared the ancient wealth-and-power disease. However in spite of multiple security measures they wrote into our Constitution to inoculate our republic against the disease, around 1980 a virulent new stain began to flare up inside America.
Unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power, including their inhumane religious ally, together with their media machine, have already made certain that our standard methods of democracy -- reading and watching the news to stay informed, supporting just causes, working on vital civic issues, whistleblowing in the public interest, engaging in principled dissent, writing to our Senators and Congressman, voting in every election -- cannot possibly stop their massive and mounting subversion and harm of America.
Worry not. Potent alternatives -- natural and lawful methods of civic power shouting out from our past and Charters of Freedom -- certainly can.
How to Jump-Start the Cure
Blow away the media fog hiding the disease and its harm to America. Expose how the media is feeding and growing the disease, helping the disease to cripple the self-governing ability and common well-being of We the People.
It would awaken and unleash two mechanisms of human survival the disease has put to sleep: Primal urges for justice like the moral outrage and fiery dissent in our Declaration of Independence. Primal action for justice like the broad and resolute unity-and-cooperation declared in our Declaration of Independence.
Betrayal and Resolution
What is the underlying problem -- and worst danger -- facing America today, a peril vastly more harmful than terrorism? Consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine -- the recent illegal fusion of federal/corporate/religious/media power into a single unchecked political power -- is subverting and hurting America. Our current form of democracy -- a rigged and corrupt "free-market democracy" that bears little resemblance to the principled "American democracy" they stealthily overrode and replaced -- cannot possibly stop them. That homeland enemy -- the enemy within -- is remarkably similar to the enemy of 1776. And to the many other flare-ups of wealth-and-power that have plagued humankind off and on throughout the ages.
Who hides and aids the enemy? The enemy's advertising/PR/news/entertainment "communication" machine: their media machine.
Their high crime against America? The enemy and their media machine are subverting our government of, by, and for We the People into a government of, by, and for wealth and power.
The solution? Wake up and rise up. Revolt against and neutralize the enemy and their media machine, and heal the many wounds they inflicted: restore and grow America's democratic processes, representative governance, and five classes of common well-being.
By what legal authority? The US Constitution: "We, the People... provide for the common defence" of America including against threats from within. It is "supreme Law of the Land" to do so.
Two guides to dust off, study, and apply? 1] The Declaration of Independence: its entire powerful substance, not the weak and faulty understanding the enemy has forced America to teach and believe today. 2] The overriding strategy of the Continental Congress which united, built, and directed citizen forces against the enemy of 1776: United We Stand (conservatives and liberals against their common right-wing enemy), Divided We Fall.
Would the revolt overthrow the authority of the state? No. American Revolution II would return the authority of the state -- from unchecked consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine (the homeland enemy, the enemy within) -- back to We the People.
Would it be bloody like American Revolution I? No. This revolt would be a supremely-lawful, long-overdue, full maintenance and tune-up of the real American democracy -- the principled secular humanistic republic -- embodied in our Constitution.
When did the enemy begin to flare up and grow inside America? Individual powers once kept separate and thus harmless -- wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, mass-media power, Christian-Right religious power -- began to consolidate into an unbridled right-wing political power around 1980.
The peril? More and more every day, and without concern for law they break or harm they inflict, the members of the homeland enemy ignore the wishes of We the People, ignore our Constitution, and freely do as they please with our country and citizens including with our US Treasury that we and our posterity fill for them.
How do they threaten America's national security? That is, how do they threaten the security of our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being? The members of the homeland enemy -- assisted by their media machine -- are attacking and wounding America's democratic processes, representative governance, and all five classes of common well-being.
What five classes of common well-being? Justice (for all and equal for all), domestic tranquility (needed for national unity and cooperation, needed to have a "United" States of America), the common defense (including homeland/national security against wealth-and-power threats from within), the general welfare (of myriad kinds that serve the public interest), and liberty (privacies and freedoms) -- for ourselves and our posterity. These five classes of common well-being are the humanistic bedrock of our "more perfect Union," where happiness and fortune can be freely pursued by individuals and corporations but never at the expense of others or the public good, as clearly spelled out in the first sentence of our Constitution since 1787.
Who has supreme responsibility to build and maintain these five classes of common well-being? We the People do, through democratic processes and representative governance.
How? The key is for all citizens especially our leaders and media -- in unity and cooperation as the "United" States of America -- to vigilantly maintain the integrity and vitality of our democratic processes and representative governance.
What happened to our vigilance including free speech and dissent, America's early warning system against threats from within? The enemy and their media machine neutered our vigilance, including our free speech and dissent, and today freely corrupt and weaken our democratic processes and representative governance, freely take governance away from We the People, freely take wealth from ourselves and our posterity, and freely hurt the rest of our present and future common good as well.
Who generates the fog that hides the enemy, hides their moral and legal wrongdoing, and hides the responsibility and power of We the People to stop the enemy and heal the harm they cause? The enemy's advertising/PR/news/entertainment "communication" machine, their media machine.
What is the purpose of their deception, including their wearing of wholesome masks and broadcasting of spin? Deception is a weapon used against an enemy, against prey. Their enemy? Their prey? The principled secular humanistic republic in our Constitution. We the People and our posterity.
What is America's "social contract?" In return for efforts made and taxes paid by We the People during our principled self-governance of America through vigilantly-maintained democratic processes and representative governance, we receive the full benefits of our caring for and living in America: five kinds of public good (the secular humanistic foundation of our "more perfect Union") AND loads of freedom to pursue happiness and fortune as socially-responsible individuals and corporations.
How did consolidated wealth-and-power, with assistance from their media machine, break the "social contract?" They broke down our vigilance AND our democratic processes and representative governance -- that is, they broke down the ability of We the People to self-govern America -- to such an extent they now freely serve themselves at the social/economic/physical expense of the public including by diverting our taxes and our posterity's taxes to themselves. In short, in a cunning stealthy War on America of the worst possible kind, they are subverting America's system of self-governance and they are slashing the benefits of living in America.
How did the Framers of our Constitution -- who understood history, who feared the ancient wealth-and-power disease that has plagued humankind off and on for ages -- try to prevent the disease from ever flaring up in our homeland and then taking wealth and power and well-being from citizens? The Framers designed a redundant protection system and embedded it in supreme law: Full, unfettered, open democratic processes -- and transparent, responsive, truly representative governance -- to keep the wealth-and-power disease in check and thus America a republic. "[I]nsure domestic Tranquility" so that citizens don't pit themselves against each other, to keep We the People able to unite and cooperate to fight the disease; "provide for the common defence" against the disease; "no religious Test[s]" to prevent religion in public servants and in other members of the public trust from feeding the disease; Trial by jury as a direct citizen check against unjust prosecution and unjust courts and unjust laws spawned by the disease (juries have a supreme duty to nullify bad laws not "made in Pursuance [of]" our Constitution); separation of powers, and separation of church and state, to prevent separate components of wealth and power from consolidating and growing into the disease; freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, to sound alarms about the disease and to call for citizen action to fight and cure the disease. The homeland enemy and their media machine, a virulent new strain of the ancient wealth-and-power disease that arose around 1980, overrode all of those homeland-security measures.
How else has the enemy weakened our security against wealth-and-power threats from within? They erased fundamental understanding of "America" from America. Today, most citizens don't know that We the People are "the government" or that the White House and Congress and Judiciary are help we hire, key employees responsible to us. Neither do we know that We the People have supreme power, not Washington. The very Essence of America spelled out in the first sentence of our Constitution -- the goals and values of our republic including America's five-point secular moral code, the supreme purpose of democratic effort including the paramount duty of free speech, the supreme responsibilities of every citizen and leader, the patriotic common ground of all conservatives and liberals, the official agenda of our country, the true national interest -- has vanished from our public education, public mind, and governance nationwide. We no longer know about the "social contract" either. By purging understanding of "America" from America, the enemy and their media machine have gravely weakened the immune system that protected our nation against the wealth-and-power disease.
Why did the wealth-and-power disease begin to flare up so fast around 1980? That's when wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, and mass-media power formed a symbiotic alliance with the Christian Right -- an aggressive and inhumane new brand of Christianity at odds with core law and values in our Constitution, a new strain of Christianity that stains mainstream Christianity, which emerged a century after the birth of America and then set in motion and fueled the historical chain of events that led to 9/11 (as summarized in the last section).
What are the traditional moral values of conservatives and liberals? "We, the People... establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" (Preamble, US Constitution).
How does the US Constitution compare to the Ten Commandments? The Preamble's five-point secular moral code (see paragraph above) -- "supreme Law of the Land" according to Article 6 -- calls upon citizens and leaders to provide far more human-to-human goodness to others than the Ten Commandments do.
What are the traditional moral values of the right wing, the real values they skillfully hide behind their conservative mask? "Do whatever it takes to gain and hoard wealth and power, even at the immense expense of others and the public good." Those right-wing values are pre-conservative and pre-liberal because they pre-date our Constitution: they are the values of the enemy of 1776, the values of the ancient wealth-and-power disease.
Who is steadily pressuring America's values to change, from the values in our Constitution toward the values of the wealth-and-power disease? The right wing: the homeland enemy, the enemy within, consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine.
What basic human values are they corroding away? Respect for others (and for the land, water, air and its creatures) is a core human value. So is personal and social responsibility. So is cooperation toward the common good. Respect, responsibility, and cooperation happen to be ancient core values of human survival. In the 1970s they were listed on our daughters' elementary-school report cards -- along with critical thinking ability -- as the top goals of human development, as the foundation of adult maturity. The human values of respect, responsibility, and cooperation date back to the dawn of our species and became embodied in our Constitution. Today, through relentless and often intense trickle-down pressure and influence from the top, America's consolidated wealth-and-power and their advertising/PR/news/entertainment media machine are purging these core human values from America -- critical thinking also -- which threatens the survival of our self-governance and well-being.
How inhumane and unjust have they already made America? One example of very many: America now has a higher percentage of its population behind bars than all other nations in the world; if Texas were a nation it would top the list. Largely minorities and the poor are incarcerated, mostly for non-violent lesser offenses. Many are housed in for-profit prisons, a taxpayer-funded growth industry that enriches wealth and power. The setup works like this. Deep cuts by the White House and Congress to "the general Welfare" cause social-and-economic breakdown and despair, forcing victims to commit desperate acts to cope and survive, funnelling them right into the awaiting trap of tough-on-crime sentencing laws for minor and minority crimes. Our nation's major offenders -- members of wealth and power who assault our democratic processes and representative governance and five classes of common well-being, who loot about $2 trillion from our citizens and posterity each year, who kill at least 50,000 members of the US public each year as collateral damage in their War on America -- get off scot-free. (A list of similar injustices by a similar enemy makes up more than half of our Declaration of Independence.)
Who already morphed our principled American democracy into a rigged free-market democracy that transfers more and more wealth, power, and well-being from We the People to the homeland enemy? The right wing: the homeland enemy, the enemy within, consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine.
Can that subversion and harm be stopped by voting the other party into power? Probably not. Republicans and Democrats are red and blue flavors of the wealth-and-power political monopoly that controls the White House and Congress ; the blue flavor is less unlawful and less inhumane than the red flavor, the primary distinction between Republicans and Democrats, which earns the red flavor better press. The monopoly's wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients, including big-media owners, through the lobbying process place orders with White House and Congressional Republicans and Democrats for the political products they want manufactured and delivered -- laws and regulations, domestic and foreign policies including wars, judge appointments and court rulings -- and they pay for those products with volumes of campaign cash and a bloc of Christian-Right votes. Republicans, Democrats, the White House, Congress, Judiciary, the wealthy, Corporate America, the Christian Right, and mass media all symbiotically cooperate in this rigged and corrupt "free-market democracy," our country's new form of democracy they morphed our principled "American democracy" into. That strengthening Republican/Democratic political monopoly feeds and grows the wealth-and-power disease the Framers feared.
How rigged and corrupt is our "free-market democracy?" One of many examples: The Commission on Presidential Debates is a private corporation created by the Republican and Democratic parties and is funded by corporations who give campaign money to both parties. Only Republican and Democratic candidates are allowed to participate in the debates. Candidates from all other parties -- and thus all discourse about restoring democratic processes, representative governance, and the five classes of common well-being -- are forcefully kept out of the debates. Their media machine dupes the general public into believing that the Commission on Presidential Debates is a taxpayer-funded federal commission run honestly.
How are conservatives and liberals fundamentally the same -- and starkly different from right wingers (members of the homeland enemy)? True conservatives and true liberals revere our Constitution -- right wingers contemptuously violate it. The patriotism of conservatives and liberals is rooted in the humanity of our Constitution -- the patriotism of the right wing (the real patriotism they hurt us with, not the fake patriotism they deceive us with) is rooted in the inhumanity that Colonial America revolted against to create our nation.
Who divides America so very skillfully that conservatives and liberals can't unite or cooperate against the small right wing that's hurting them both? The right wing: the homeland enemy, the enemy within, consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine.
To what extent have they divided America into tiny fragments of self-interest? How dangerously have they bred out unity and cooperation toward the common good? Besides engineering and growing the rancorous conservative/liberal division, they sliced and diced the electorate into several dozen demographic groups, and into hundreds of subcategories under that, and they fuel discord among divisions. As a result, most Americans today see competition for individual and narrow-interest well-being, not cooperation toward the common good, as the game and goal of democracy. Soon, the United States of America may no longer be in the state of being united enough to cooperate or care for itself.
Why do they insure "domestic Discord" instead of "domestic Tranquility" as required by "supreme Law of the Land" in the first sentence of our Constitution? To prevent unity and cooperation. To make it easy to divide and conquer America.
How much have they warped civic responsibility? Originally, We the People (the government) undertook supreme responsibility to "establish Justice [1], insure domestic Tranquility [2], provide for the common defence [3], promote the general Welfare [4], and secure the Blessings of Liberty [5] to ourselves and our Posterity" through democratic processes and representative governance. Today, [1] through [5] are seen as entitled rights to be delivered to We the People (the subjects) on a silver platter by "the government" (our rulers) in Washington.
How far have they twisted the duty of free speech? Originally, First-Amendment free speech meant "freedom" to speak -- as in not being arrested or jailed or physically hurt for it -- to warn about and call for action against threats and harm to our country and citizens. Today, free speech is an individual right of self-expression, for the purpose of self-gratification, that is utterly devoid of its original supreme purpose of protecting and preserving our principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being.
How much have they cheapened and weakened our most beloved Charter of Freedom? And why? Our Declaration of Independence is perhaps the greatest document of dissent ever written. The core of the charter is 1] a list of injustices by the enemy against the common good, the moral reasons for revolt, and 2] a declaration of resolve to get out from under the enemy and build and grow principled self-governance and bountiful common good. Today's enemy stealthily cleansed that fierce patriotism from our public education and public mind. All we know now are a few sound-bites like "unalienable Rights" and "pursuit of Happiness." To teach and promote our Declaration of Independence at full strength would give hope, resolve, and immense civic power to We the People to fight the homeland enemy and their media machine as effectively as Colonial America fought the enemy of 1776 -- basic Civics-101 education the enemy cannot allow.
Toward what end does the homeland enemy deceive, manipulate, subvert, and divide-and-conquer America? The ancient usual purpose: to take and hoard wealth and power.
Did history forewarn today's America and teach the solution? Yes, for thousands of years, until consolidated wealth-and-power recently erased those history lessons from America. Throughout tens of millennia of human history, conventional wisdom (of many past generations of We the People worldwide) was to watch wealth-and-power like a hawk (eternal vigilance is the price of liberty and all other forms of common well-being), prevent wealth-and-power from flaring up (such as with the multiple security measures in our Constitution), keep wealth-and-power on a short leash (such as with citizen regulation of corporations), or else suffer the grave consequences. For example, ancient Greece understood and feared the consequences of allowing wealth-and-power to build up and run wild; besides giving us the word "democracy," ancient Greece also created words for what happens when vigilance and cooperation toward humanistic democracy become damaged and then fail: "plutocracy," "theocracy," "kakistocracy." The Framers applied those history lessons as they wrote our Constitution, and so did the citizens and leaders of early America as they lived our Constitution.
American Revolution II would benefit whom? We the People, conservatives and liberals alike, including our corporations and religions and media. Our posterity. The world's other nations and citizens. As well as Nature and Earth.
How to win? That is, how to resolve the immense betrayal by our leaders and press in whom we place our trust? Merely do what normal humans and good citizens would do. To overcome and refortify the enemy's weakening of America's many democratic processes, and to surmount and clean up their corruption of America's representative governance, pick up and sharpen and wield the potent innate-human and supreme-law weapons from our past and Charters of Freedom. Study, circulate, refine, and apply the four-element strategy herein. (Modern versions of Paul Revere's Ride, the Continental Congress, and Declaration of Independence are all part of Element 1.)
How small -- and defeatable -- is the right-wing homeland enemy? Their wealth/corporate core (described herein) is a half-million strong, 0.2% of the public. Their Christian-Right core (described herein) is 30-million strong, 10% of the public. Neutralize the tiny wealth/corporate core (by ending their control and corruption of Washington and the media) and the power of Christian Right simultaneously disintegrates. 90% of the public -- all the conservatives and liberals, including today's Minutemen, being tricked and hurt by the right wing -- could be easily marshaled into a unified civic power more than 200-million strong.
What is the supreme purpose of our Second-Amendment right to keep and bear arms? Same as the rest of the redundant homeland/national-security system the Framers wove into our Constitution: to protect ourselves and our country against enemies of the type described in our Declaration of Independence. The homeland enemy and their media machine amply qualify. Today's Minutemen would use symbolic flintlocks of course.
Besides the deception, manipulation, subversion, and divide-and-conquer schemes touched upon above, how else is the enemy trying to destroy the civic power of We the People? And why will they ultimately fail? Throughout the ages humans have responded to corruption with moral disgust and to injustice with moral outrage (as exemplified in our Declaration of Independence), and then with unity and cooperation to end the corruption and injustice (as during the revolt that gave birth to our principled secular humanistic republic). So of course wealth-and-power and their media machine are busily disabling the moral disgust and moral outrage they fear might stop them -- skillfully and effectively so: in public discourse nationwide, there's little evidence that we even care that the enemy is robbing us blind $2-trillion annually and causing collateral death in our homeland at the rate of more than sixteen 9/11s a year. But that can easily change and blow up in their face. Modern science (that the far right is trying hard to weaken) is revealing how moral disgust and moral outrage, as well as cooperation toward common well-being, seem to be survival emotion and survival behavior embedded in our DNA. These primal urges for justice, today being tricked into slumber by the homeland enemy and their national manipulation team, can be awakened and unleashed -- on a massive scale. The key is make 300 million citizens keenly aware of the enormity of the enemy's lawbreaking and inhumanity and their utter lack of remorse about it -- say in a new outpouring of moral disgust and moral outrage in a new version of the Declaration of Independence modeled after the successful original -- which would ignite and fuel the necessary corrective revolt. Thus the enemy will ultimately fail in their attempts to block the survival power, the civic power, in our genes. Moral disgust and moral outrage -- they wake up and rise up from our deep urges to be treated fairly, especially by the people we are taught and told to trust -- are as innate, powerful, and vital for the survival of our species as our drives for water, food, and sex. They cannot be stopped.
Why begin the corrective revolt soon? Because the runaway right-wing enemy within is beginning to grow into a fascistic power.
The goal? To again have a public trust -- a White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, and press -- that the public can trust. So that We the People can restore and grow the principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being embodied in our Constitution.
The Coming Corrective Revolt
This public document, a summary of CivicPowerUSA.org where facts and figures above and below are explained, is a big-picture full-solution democracy weapon/tool for conservatives and liberals alike.
This work is meant to be a springboard -- and a guide -- for We the People to organize and achieve the American Revolution II outlined herein.
It contains a synopsis of core civic knowledge -- of civic empowerment -- that citizens must rediscover and fathom and cherish to accomplish real change. Basic knowledge like this: What does the first sentence of our Constitution actually mean? How is "American democracy" very different from -- and vastly superior to -- "generic majority-is-right democracy?" Who is "the government?" Who has "supreme power?" During the past quarter century, in order to weaken our national defense against wealth-and-power threats from within, the right has seen to it that the public is no longer empowered with this core civic knowledge.
Contrary to how the media depicts conservatives and liberals and sways them to act -- conservatives and liberals are divisive opposites who compete against and fight each other -- in reality true conservatives and right wingers (the homeland enemy) are as different as night and day, conservatives and liberals have very much in common, and the right wingers hurting both are tiny in number. Imagine how 200 million conservatives and liberals would react when taught the full extent of how they, their families, and their future generations are being systematically hurt by the right -- socially, economically, physically -- including by several forms of clever stealthy looting. Thus the tiny right wing is vulnerable to overwhelming defeat by a vast conservative/liberal majority through powerful innate-human and supreme-law means.
Why does the media insure domestic discord, rather than "insure domestic Tranquility" as required by our Constitution? Why does the media protect and serve the right wing, rather than protect and serve We the People as required by our Constitution? They do it to prevent conservatives and liberals from uniting and cooperating to protect America against the right. They do it to help the right divide and conquer America and take spoils of wealth and power.
To achieve the coming victory, two tried-and-true methods are proposed and outlined in this document: We the People act on our deep primal urges for justice, We the People carry out our supreme Law of the Land. These two well-proven strategies are shouting out from our ancient human past, early American history, Declaration of Independence, and Constitution.
The goal? Unite and cooperate to neutralize the right wing and their media machine. Then restore and grow our democratic processes, our representative governance, and our five classes of common well-being listed in the first sentence of our Constitution (that are no longer taught in our public schools, or conscious in our public mind, due to the right's power and influence).
By what legal authority can we undertake American Revolution II? For starters, "We, the People... provide for the common defence" of America against the homeland enemy -- this paramount civic responsibility of We the People (in the Preamble) is "supreme Law of the Land" (according to Article 6). Besides the First Amendment, there are many other powerful legal means in our Constitution -- patriotic supreme-law weapons the right doesn't want We the People to know about or wield against them.
Circulate and apply this basic weapon/tool nationwide -- especially to and by journalists, educators, mainstream clergy, responsible business and political leaders, public-interest and civic-action groups -- to accomplish this: Expose the right's giant divide-and-conquer ruse for taking wealth and power from We the People and our posterity, and from other nations also. Lay bare the right's purge of civic understanding from America, and how it has severely weakened America's first line of defense against consolidated-wealth-and-power threats from within. Reveal the rest of the immensity and danger of the right's moral and legal wrongdoing. List precisely HOW the right's myriad acts of subversion and harm have violated our Constitution in technicality and spirit including all "American values" in the Preamble. Present the big-picture full solution to the entire American public. Do all this to incite, empower, and enlist the 90% conservative/liberal majority (more than 200 million citizens) -- who today are being looted and hurt by the 10% right-wing minority (an alliance of 0.5 million wealth/corporate people and 30 million people in the Christian Right) -- to unite and cooperate against the right for the good of themselves and their country. Then declare and launch the corrective civic revolt that our Constitution cries out for. That's Element 1 of the four-element plan, the big-picture full solution, at the end of this document.
1980-2005: from Republic to Kakistocracy
"Republic:" government in which supreme power lies in citizens who vote for representatives responsible to them.
"Kakistocracy:" government by the least qualified or most unprincipled citizens.
An illegal homeland enemy -- the consolidation of wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, mass-media power, and Christian-Right religious power into the unbridled power which began to flare up around 1980 and controls and loots and hurts America today -- is stealthily and rapidly corrupting our principled secular humanistic republic into a theocratic plutocratic kakistocracy.
Historians explain how the consolidation began early in America -- how America's wealth and power was already somewhat concentrated at our nation's birth -- then grew slowly and steadily. Recent history describes how the consolidation began to accelerate around 1980, especially after wealth/corporate power and executive/legislative/judicial federal power and intelligence/military power and red/blue political-monopoly power drew the Christian Right and the full force of the communication industry (advertising, public relations, journalism, entertainment) into their wealth-and-power fusion. Current events are sounding alarms, more loudly every day, about this peril to our nation.
Our "republic" is supposed to work like this: the White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, and free press serve We the People and our posterity in a "more perfect Union" where even corporations and religion do good and do well in accordance with our Constitution.
Today's "kakistocracy" works like this: the White House, Congress, Judiciary, Republicans, Democrats, and their media machine serve wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients (a small minority) at the immense tragic expense of We the People and our posterity (the huge majority) in violation of our Constitution.
The right-wing enemy within is dividing and conquering America -- without concern for law they break, without concern for harm they inflict -- to take and hoard the usual spoils of wealth and power.
The White House, Congress, and our press have switched sides: from serving We the People, to serving the homeland enemy. The Judiciary, installed by the White House and Congress, is shifting to that new allegiance also. So is our military.
How did the enemy pull it off? First, they destroyed our first line of defense: our vigilance. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty," early patriots warned. Eternal vigilance is also the price of democratic processes, representative governance, justice, unity and cooperation, homeland/national security, and the general welfare. They suppress and punish vigilance. They cleverly manipulate the public to HELP them crush vigilance.
The enemy forged advertising, public relations, journalism, and entertainment into a stealthy weapon of homeland conquest: into a mass-media "communication" machine that spins and hides the enemy's wrongdoing, and persuades We the People to go along with and actively support the enemy's efforts. How skillfully do they manipulate us into losing our supreme power, into losing our common well-being? We no longer know that we possess supreme power, we no longer know that five classes of common well-being are listed in the first sentence of our Constitution. We think the media is liberal and our Constitution isn't. We are no longer conscious that America is a "republic" and we can't see the "kakistocracy" that's destroying it.
Deception is a weapon used against enemies, against prey. Their enemy, their prey? The principled secular humanistic republic in our Constitution, We the People and our posterity.
America isn't their only target. Many other nations -- who they want to bend to their will and control, whose assets they covet and want to take -- are under diplomatic, economic, subversive, or military assault. Or are in their sights. Such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Iraq. They even say so among themselves (including in Executive Branch and World Bank/IMF documents) just like they did about Vietnam (Pentagon Papers); defending America from abroad, spreading democracy abroad, and fostering well-being abroad are their PR cover and enlistment tool for their conquest and plunder abroad.
Such is our new "kakistocracy." A healthy vigilant "republic" would not have let it happen.
Begin the Patriotic Solution
The right-wing homeland enemy is steering America back toward the social and economic unfairness that existed before the American Revolution.
Since the homeland enemy has already grown so powerful, the America defined by our Constitution -- principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being -- cannot be restored or advanced by using the standard civic and political methods of today. Both political parties, and our print and airwave press, protect and serve the homeland enemy. Individual acts of good citizenship -- reading and watching the news to stay informed, supporting just causes, working on vital civic issues, whistleblowing in the public interest, engaging in principled dissent, writing to our Senators and Congressman, voting in every election -- barely work anymore. Even large groups are tricked by the enemy to work alone and thus to fail: again and again, each lone narrow effort toward the public interest is singled out and often crushed by the right's full might.
Nationwide unity and cooperation, and a well-organized broad-based national defense against the homeland enemy, are needed. Both are called for and authorized by the first sentence of our Constitution.
To assure success, wield our WHOLE Constitution; the First Amendment is just a tiny part of it. Advertise the future benefits -- we would save about 2-trillion dollars a year now being taken by the enemy (about $15,000 per taxpayer a year), we would save more than 50,000 of our lives a year now being taken by the enemy, we would grow back America's common good in myriad other major ways -- and use them as hot points to incite the public to wake up and rise up and as planks for a new political party. For strategy tips, consult the history of America's birth: Paul Revere's ride warned of the enemy, the Continental Congress united/built/directed citizen forces against the enemy, the Declaration of Independence described the enemy, listed its many injustices, and pledged united action to neutralize the enemy and end its injustices and to grow a nation of principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being. Why not be truly "American" and undertake these proven methods today.
BE the State!
The political slant of this alert and plan is pure American: toward the humanity and law in our Constitution.
What humanity and law? Humanity and law that America's wealth and power have erased from the public education and public mind of America. They erased this: "We, the People" are the government of America and supreme power in America. In order to form and enjoy a "more perfect Union" in which people and corporations can freely pursue happiness and fortune where no one gets treated unfairly or exploited or hurt in that process, through democratic processes and representative governance We the People "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility [required for national unity and cooperation], provide for the common defence [including against threats to democracy and common well-being from within our homeland], promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." To achieve and maintain our "more perfect Union," ordinary citizens and their families, elected and appointed representatives, and our institutions including the press all have the paramount social responsibility -- civic duty -- to live up to our Constitution's Preamble, Articles, Amendments, and foundation principles of separation of powers and separation of church and state. Executive/legislative/judicial representatives are responsible to We the People (their employers) and to our Constitution (their moral and legal authority).
As you dust off and read the first sentence of the US Constitution, take astounding note of this: "[E]stablish Justice [1], insure domestic Tranquility [needed for unity and cooperation] [2], provide for the common defence [3], promote the general Welfare [4], and secure the Blessings of Liberty [5]" call upon We the People and our elected and appointed representatives -- conservatives and liberals alike -- to provide far more humanity and common well-being to our nation's inhabitants and posterity than the Ten Commandments do. [1] through [5] are in essence the Five Commandments of America, the core moral values of America, our American interests, the national interest, the humanitarian basis of our "more perfect Union" where wealth and power are never supposed to subvert democracy or inflict harm on anyone. This five-point moral system, these five classes of common well-being, are entirely secular -- and they are supreme Law of the Land (read Article 6 of our Constitution). This vital supreme law has been subversively cleansed from America's civic, political, and moral consciousness.
All the above humanity and law is still very much alive in our Constitution that is patiently waiting for We the People to wake up, read it, rise up, and wield it.
What can We the People do with our civic powers (we have two basic kinds, innate and legal)? We can restore and grow our democratic processes (including a free press), representative governance, equal justice for all, domestic tranquility needed for unity and cooperation, national defense and homeland/national security (especially against threats from within, by far the worst danger facing America today), the general welfare of several kinds, and liberty -- for ourselves and our posterity.
First steps? Execute a modern version of Paul Revere's ride to warn all of America about the homeland enemy: the federal/corporate/religious/media consolidation of wealth and power that's subverting and hurting America, an un-Constitutional right-wing enemy within remarkably similar to the enemy of 1776. Form a modern version of the American Revolution's Continental Congress: a broad-based conservative and liberal national civic-action congress to unite, build, coordinate, and direct citizen forces against the illegal right-wing homeland enemy and their media machine. The new congress, of course, would issue a modern version of the Declaration of Independence that features (like the original) a description of the homeland enemy a list of the injustices they committed. A spin-off from the congress? A new political party, say a "USA" party, devoted to living up to the humanity and law in our Constitution, that would win landslide victories against the two major parties who today represent and service the wealthy, Corporate America, and the Christian Right at the expense of We the People and our posterity.
One of the rewards to "the general Welfare" -- and a big selling point for the new party? A national savings of about $2 trillion a year by eliminating tax fleecing (today's White House and Congress stealthily launder much of our tax money to the wealthy and corporations just like the enemy of 1776 did, they force us pay the hidden de facto Christian-Right religious tax, and more) and by stopping corporate gouging (think Enron, 500% APR payday loans, escalating cost of healthcare, and so on). The average savings for each and every taxpayer? $15,000 a year.
The other rewards -- that is, the many other benefits to the general welfare PLUS the many benefits to our democratic processes, representative governance, justice, unity and cooperation, homeland/national security, and liberty for ourselves and our posterity -- would be equally as bountiful.
All these benefits could be used as selling points by a new political party, as planks of their platform. All these Benefits of America, today being slashed by the homeland enemy, would appeal to and bring hope to the conservative and liberal electorate. Voter turnout would skyrocket in rebellion against the Republicans and Democrats exploiting and hurting America and our posterity.
Many Americans desire and strive for real change: for our country to head back up to the humanity and law in our Constitution. But so far all efforts have failed because they failed to employ a key strategy of the American Revolution: United We Stand, Divided We Fall. Such efforts fail because they are splintered and weak without unity and cooperation from an available broad base of support, aimless with a confusing flurry of band-aid goals that fall way short of solving the overall problem and are often issued in knee-jerk response to news of the moment, counterproductive to the point of aiding the divide-and-conquer efforts of the enemy within. Under that Divided-We-Fall strategy, each and every diluted and weak civic effort is singled out and easily brushed off or crushed by the well-organized full might of the homeland enemy. (Back above and further below, study other enemy-within manipulations that We the People must learn to spot and surmount.)
An example. One of the many passionate well-meaning groups striving for change is "Eat the State!" However We the People -- we are the government of America and supreme power in America -- ARE the state. We the People -- the state -- are bound by law to bring about principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being. We certainly don't want to "Eat" We the People or principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being.
Our Constitution suggests a more effective name for that group. Our Constitution directs us to unite, cooperate, and "BE the State!" An empowering title or slogan. The very essence of real American democracy.
Divided We Fall
A "United" States of America -- conservatives and liberals (90% of the public) united against the small right wing (10% of the public) hurting conservatives, liberals, and their families and futures -- is needed to lift our nation back up to the humane and lawful America defined by our Constitution.
The problem: The right, the right-wing homeland enemy (posing as "conservative") and their media machine (posing as "liberal"), are PREVENTING a "United" States of America in violation of our Constitution's first sentence -- "We, the People... insure domestic Tranquility" needed for national unity and cooperation. The right is busily insuring "domestic Discord," wounding our ability to unite and cooperate, which imperils our principled democracy and common well-being including the ability of "We, the People" to "provide for the common defence" against the homeland enemy.
The right is dividing and conquering America to take and hoard the usual spoils of wealth and power.
Their annual wealth spoils are enormous and growing, about $2 trillion a year (about $15,000 per taxpayer a year). So is the collateral damage, more than 50,000 unnecessary citizen deaths a year. (The list of homeland-enemy injustices is similar to the list of enemy-of-1776 injustices in our Declaration of Independence, a list the right has manipulated America not to read or remember anymore). Our press has become the right's lookout and getaway car for these (and many other) major crimes.
Our democratic processes (including our free press), representative governance, justice, unity and cooperation, national defense and homeland/national security, the general welfare, and liberty are ALL taking beatings from the right.
The trick is to overcome the right's deceptions (spread by their advertising/PR/news/entertainment media machine) which hide and spin the lawbreaking and harm they commit. The trick is to overcome the right's divide-and-conquer manipulations (including those that pit conservatives and liberals against each other). The trick is to overcome the right's erasure of our Constitution's humanity and law from our education and citizenship and governance (which is why millions can't tell that the right is wrong).
What if We the People DON'T wake up? And DON'T unite and cooperate to defend America against the illegal consolidation of federal/corporate/religious/media power (the homeland enemy) as required by the first sentence of our Constitution ("We, the People... provide for the common defence")? Then look forward to the fascistic Amerika the right is sliding our nation into.
The Framers feared such a fate, and wrote SEVERAL homeland/national-security measures into our Constitution to prevent unchecked wealth and power from ever forming and growing and then savaging America from within. The right overrode all of them.
United We Stand
Resurrect and wield our two major civic powers: the human power that created America, the legal power in our Constitution. Or else lose more heart and soul of America -- principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being -- to the homeland enemy usurping it.
Throughout the ages people have naturally responded to corruption with moral disgust, to injustice with moral outrage, and then with unity and cooperation to end corruption and injustice. During the American Revolution that innate-human civic power gave bloody birth (symbolized by the red in our Flag) to our supreme-law civic power: We the People, the government of America, have Law-of-the-Land power and responsibility to defend America against today's homeland enemy -- an enemy within similar in character to the enemy of 1776 -- and to restore and grow our democracy and common good that the homeland enemy has usurped.
What is and who are the homeland enemy? How harmful and illegal are they? How small and beatable are they? Wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, mass-media power, and Christian-Right religious power (all serviced by the red/blue political-party monopoly) -- separate powers that are supposed to be kept apart and thus harmless in order to protect and preserve our democracy and common well-being -- around 1980 began to consolidate into the unbridled right-wing power that controls and loots and hurts America today. They are the homeland enemy, the enemy within. They assault and wound the heart and soul of America: our democratic processes, representative governance, and all five categories of common well-being (listed in the first sentence of our Constitution): equal justice for all, domestic tranquility needed for unity and cooperation, national defense and homeland/national security, the general welfare of several kinds, and our liberties. They also harm our posterity, other countries and their people, and the environment. They block and distort truth, suppress whistleblowing and dissent, and neuter civic action and political opposition that would expose and stop their lawbreaking and harm. In the process they violate our Constitution in technicality and spirit to the core: the Preamble, Articles, Amendments, and foundation principles of separation of powers and separation of church and state. Their wealth/corporate core -- the White House, much of Congress and the Judiciary, big contributors of cash to Republicans/Democrats and to influence/lobby groups that sway them, and right-wing institutes, societies, foundations, and think tanks -- total about 0.2% of the public, a half-million voters. The Christian Right (and their many inhumane radical-right and hate-group spin-offs) total about 10% of the public, 30 million voters. The entire right-wing homeland enemy is a small group of people that is 100% vincible by more than 200 million conservative-and-liberal We the People during honest political campaigns and honest national elections.
The people in whom we place our trust -- the White House, Congress, Judiciary, Republicans and Democrats, and our press -- now betray us.
9/11, Iraq, and the War on Terror are three of myriad symptoms of that betrayal.
Beginning in 1980, a USA-Saudi collaboration recruited Islamic fighters from around the world and armed and trained them in Afghanistan and Pakistan into a proxy US military weapon to fight Russians in Afghanistan. The operation was funded with billions of US tax dollars and an equal amount of US petro dollars from the Saudis. CIA camps in Pakistan taught arts of fighting and terrorism, which became a model for al-Qaeda camps in Afghanistan that arose after the CIA left; a CIA camp in Virginia trained leaders of the jihad force. The operation indoctrinated local schoolchildren with American-supplied textbooks filled with militant Islamic teachings, and through a network of Wahabi madrassahs (Saudi fundamentalist-Islam schools) that supplanted local secular schools. The Christian Right supported the operation, and came down hard on Senators and Congresspeople who didn't. That jihad-brewing cauldron in Afghanistan and Pakistan -- designed, built, boiled, and stirred by the leaders of America and Saudi Arabia -- drew in and joined together militant radicals and followers from many countries (including from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Yemen, Lebanon, Pakistan, Malaysia, Philippines, Indonesia), gave rise to al-Qaeda and the Taliban, transformed the region's moderate Islam into radical Islam, leaked into and hurt India and Kashmir, then spilled out into the world in many streams. In the late 1980s when the White House and Congress no longer needed a jihad force to fight Russians for them in Afghanistan, they abruptly discarded their still-loaded weapon, which tentacled worldwide as tens of thousands of CIA-trained jihad-indoctrinated fighters returned to their homelands around the globe, grew into an international terrorism network, and fired on America on 9/11/2001.
US policy expert Chalmers Johnson, author of Blowback: The Cost and Consequences of American Empire, told Asia Times Online: "Richard Armitage [previous Deputy Secretary of State], Condoleezza Rice [Secretary of State and previous National Security Advisor], Colin Powell [previous Secretary of State] and Dick Cheney [Vice President] ran the biggest clandestine operation we [the US] ever carried out anywhere - recruiting, arming and training the mujahideen. And we just walked away and left them to the most devastating civil war, and they realized that they had been used as cannon fodder in a skirmish of the Cold War. They wanted retaliation." He explained how those actions were "kept secret from the American public" so that when "[9/11] retaliation came [the American public] had no means to put in context or understand it as a cause and effect relationship."
The Iraq war -- the right's dream since the early 1990s, eagerly launched when a golden Pearl-Harbor opportunity arose, 9/11 which they immediately blamed on Iraq in spite of the hijackers being from Saudi Arabia mostly, a premeditated armed heist of wealth and power gone bad -- so far is a huge financial winner for corporations whose weapons and munitions destroyed and inflicted carnage on Iraq and who service the war with high-profit contracts (including by supplying well-paid bodyguards and mercenaries, many who earn $1000 a day tax-free, each costing taxpayers at least $2000 a day due to the hefty markup). However the war is not yet a winner for the many other corporations lined up to profit after armed conflict subsides. The bloodier it gets for Iraqis and Americans as more and more well-funded jihadists including suicide bombers infiltrate into Iraq and join the insurgency, earnings for America's war industries rise, and the size and clout of the Christian Right grows (explained several paragraphs below), as they profit more and more from the Golden Blowback Egg they laid in Afghanistan in the 1980s. So no matter which way the war turns, towards peace or more carnage, Corporate America and the Christian Right get at least some of what they want, who then thank the White House and Congress with campaign cash and Christian-Right voter support, a masterful win-win made possible by the wealth/corporate Christian-Right political alliance forged around 1980. The decade-long premeditation, the comprehensive plans to take Iraq's economic and natural resources over the long term, the long-harbored intent to control the region, and Christian-Right yearning for Apocalyptic conflict in the region are all well documented. So are the immense costs to Iraq and Iraqis, and to America and Americans. The White House and their oil-company clients were concerned about Iraq's oil falling into the hands of foreign oil companies; "The U.S. majors stand to lose if Saddam makes a deal with the U.N. (on lifting sanctions)," noted a report by Germany's Deutsche Bank in October 2002. During the invasion the first mission of our troops was to seize Iraq's oil fields and oil ministry. Oil is merely one of the prizes. To view the enormous scope of the intent to plunder Iraq's state-owned wealth and natural-resource wealth, and to turn Iraq into a rigged and corrupt free-market paradise for foreign corporations, read the plan "Moving the Iraqi Economy from Recovery to Sustainable Growth" issued by the White House a month before their March-20-2003 Shock-and-Awe launch of the war, and also read the Executive Orders and coalition orders (such as the Bremer Orders) that implement the plan. The plan's content, and its pleasant-sounding title word for word except for the name of the country, are similar to plans for World Bank/IMF projects where multinational corporations extracted wealth from and harmed the recipient nations -- through privatization of state-owned enterprises into ownership by foreign corporations, through crippling interest payments, by forcing cuts in government-supplied public services including education and healthcare and public transportation and fair-priced water and energy, by shredding the social and economic safety net -- all under PR-designed guises of selfless helping and giving. The White House's Iraq plan, and its implementation orders, spell out intent to similarly loot Iraq by fully privatizing Iraq's state-owned public enterprises, by taking over Iraq's financial sector which will enrich outside corporations at the expense of Iraqis, by rewriting Iraq's business regulations including to prevent fair labor practices, by changing Iraq's tax codes including to implement regressive taxes, by altering Iraq's patent/copyright laws including to require Iraqi farmers to buy seed from US corporations every season, by burdening Iraq with heavy debt and crippling interest payments to the World Bank/IMF headquartered in the USA, and much more. Targeted for privatization (transfer of ownership to foreign corporations) are more than 200 Iraqi state-owned enterprises including water services, electric utilities, transportation systems, factories, farms, television, newspapers, publishing, schools, hospitals, and prisons. Government-supplied public services -- including education, healthcare, public transportation, water and energy supplies -- are to be reduced or eliminated; those public services are to be supplied by corporations headquartered outside of Iraq as part of the new "free market" intended for Iraq. The plan in brief: conquer and demolish Iraq, rebuild Iraq in the image of the far right, then mine the spoils of wealth for years. (Execution of a milder version of the same basic plan by the same small group of people, in a mounting stealthy War on America our press won't report, has been subverting and hurting our nation since around 1980.) A key architect of the war on Iraq now presides over the World Bank where he helps to oversee the venture planned over a decade earlier. The control-and-plunder of Iraq is being carried out by the huge new US embassy in Iraq (the largest US embassy complex in the world, with a staff of about 5000 workers including World Bank/IMF personnel and private contractors, whose ambassador has long been allied with Texas energy corporations), by US advisers and US puppets embedded in Iraq's government, under the protection of the US military, and is funded by conquest spoils and by US taxpayers -- and by our posterity through federal borrowing. All in violation of American law and international law. The UN Charter forbids countries to wage war except 1] in self-defense in response to armed attack, or 2] when authorized by the UN Security Council to preserve or restore international peace. If a war fails to meet these two criteria, then it is an unlawful act of aggression defined and condemned by the Nuremberg Charter as "the supreme international crime." Due to the planning/preparation/initiation/waging of aggressive and not defensive war, due to the waging of war without Congress declaring war, due to the refusal of all offers to seek a negotiated solution, due to the UN voting down authorization for the war, due to the planning for and commission of torture, the Iraq venture has violated the UN Charter, Nuremberg Charter, Geneva Conventions, Article 1 of the US Constitution, Article 6 of the US Constitution, the US War Crimes Act, which are violations of American law and international law that many leaders in the White House and Congress and US military can be held accountable for. Our news media hide all this from the public eye, and falsely report the Iraq venture as "defending America," "fighting terrorism," and "bringing democracy to Iraq." The Pentagon deludes our troops to believe it also, the brainwashing is intensive, otherwise they wouldn't lay a hand on Iraq. "Support Our Troops" is marketing code for "Support The War," so is "Remember 9/11," skillful manipulation that tricks the public to support the conquest and plunder of Iraq with "United We Stand" "American Pride."
Executive-branch personnel who in the 1980s were heavily involved in creating the jihad-weapon cause of 9/11, two decades later as Cabinet Members and the Vice President falsely blamed Iraq for 9/11.
In the 1980s, We the People paid to build up that jihad weapon -- a US weapon -- with billions of our tax dollars (US half-share of the funding) and with billions of our petro dollars at the gas pump (Saudi half-share of the funding). Today, we spend considerably more trying to destroy that abandoned military weapon -- at least a hundred billion dollars a year for a Weapon Disposal Program called "War on Terror."
The reality: War on Terror is war on a military weapon made by the USA and Saudi Arabia, a weapon they discarded and let go deadly berserk on the world.
The spin: The homeland enemy, aided by their advertising/PR/news/entertainment media machine, skillfully use 9/11 and War on Terror as justification and cover for their wars of conquest on Iraq and on the democracy, common good, and posterity of America.
The wealth-and-power disease, a political cancer, has been humankind's nemesis for ages. The disease runs in cycles: it lies dormant, then flares up and inflicts harm on its own community or nation and often beyond its own borders, then goes dormant due to self-infliction or is forced dormant by its domestic or foreign victims through revolt or war. 9/11, Iraq, and the War on Terror are just three of the symptoms of a new strain of that ancient disease. Which began to flare up in America around 1980 as wealth/corporate power, executive/legislative/judicial federal powers, intelligence/military power, red/blue political-party power, mass-media power, and Christian-Right religious power began to consolidate into an unchecked political power in violation of our Constitution.
The Framers of our Constitution knew and feared that ancient political disease. To prevent wealth and power from ever consolidating and taking over and hurting America, they wrote several homeland/national-security measures into our Constitution to protect America against such danger from within. The homeland enemy overrode all of them.
About deception. Deception is a weapon used against enemies, against prey. True conservatives and true liberals are rooted in and revere the humanity and law in our Constitution, and thus have very much in common. In sharp contrast, the right wing massively violates that humanity and law as if in sympathy with the enemy of 1776 -- the right wing is pre-conservative: they seem rooted in the many injustices that Colonial America revolted against; a strongly-worded list of those injustices makes up more than half of our Declaration of Independence. Thus true conservatives and right-wingers are as different as night and day. To hide their inhumanity, the Christian Right wears "evangelical Christian" and "Pro-Life" masks. The entire right wing wears a "conservative" or "neocon" mask (representing the traditional beliefs and values in our Constitution that they dislike and violate) to hide the their heartlessness and unlawfulness. Without huge assistance from their advertising and public-relations experts and from America's news and entertainment corporations -- a giant media machine that wears a false "liberal" mask -- they could not pull off those deceptions. Their enemy? Their prey? The principled secular humanistic republic in our Constitution. We the People and our posterity.
More about deception. They, the homeland enemy and their media machine, use the slogan "free market" to hide their rigged-market practices that prevent free and fair markets. They use "free trade" to hide their rigged-globalized-trade practices that prevent free and fair global trade. Their victims in Senegal have called those practices "savage capitalism." They use "radical leftist" and "socialist" to vilify leaders abroad (Venezuela, Bolivia) who promote the general welfare in their nations with public-financed education and healthcare and social services, with public-owned utilities and infrastructure, with profits from their nation's natural resources, all in defiance of today's White House and Congress and World Bank/IMF whose corporate partners covet and want to extract the financial and natural-resource assets of those nations (as with Iraq) to benefit themselves. Their "free market," "free trade," "radical leftist," "socialist" deceptions are as dishonest and dangerous as their "evangelical Christian," "Pro-Life," "conservative," "neocon," "liberal" deceptions.
Proof that "foster democracy abroad" is merely a deception and not at all a goal of the White House and Congress? The State Department and CIA, under direction from the White House and Congress, altered the governments of Iran (1953), Guatemala (1954), and Chile (1973) from democracies into dictatorships to protect the economic interests of US corporations extracting wealth from those countries -- oil, fruit, minerals respectively. Covert destruction of Iran's democracy in 1953 (for oil) led directly to the rise of militant Islam in Iran in the late 1970s, a problem created by America, a problem that we and the world must deal with today. In the 1980s they aided right-wing dictatorships in El Salvador and Nicaragua which profited the US corporations operating there. To train military and paramilitary personnel for Washington-friendly Central/South American right-wing governments and dictatorships, they founded the US Army School of the Americas (SOA) in Fort Benning GA in 1946, which in a January-2001 cloaking attempt by Washington was renamed to Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHISC). Within months after the Congo won its independence in 1960, Washington had its new prime minister assassinated (Lumumba) and installed a dictator (Mobutu) so that US corporations could keep on extracting the Congo's mineral wealth for themselves. In a similar clandestine intervention against the new democracy of Angola in the 1970s, Washington failed to gain free access for US corporations to Angola's natural wealth; the resulting strife and damage and death left Angola as ruined as the Congo. In a December-20-1983 CNN news photo and video showing Donald Rumsfeld shaking hands with Saddam Hussein, both are smiling warmly; from 1959 to 1990 Saddam was a friend of the White House and Congress, a key intelligence and foreign-policy asset even while he was murdering his own people with American chemical-weapon technology and materiel; we and our allies also supplied Saddam with the means to make biological and nuclear weapons. A main purpose of dictator support by America? To transfer as much total wealth as possible from the victim countries into the coffers of Washington's corporate clients: natural wealth such as minerals and oil; social-spending wealth that would otherwise establish justice, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to the countries' inhabitants; posterity wealth by seducing and forcing those nations into massive World Bank/IMF debt. US-installed and US-supported dictators helped Washington to achieve those plundering goals. In every case, collateral civilian death was brutal and often massive. Consequences reverberate today especially in the Middle East, Central and South America, and Africa. This shortlist/summary is just the tip of Washington's dirty iceberg of "fostering democracy abroad."
If We the People don't wake up and rise up soon, Washington's future muscle for "fostering democracy abroad" may come from the Space Warfare Center (SWC) at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado. The unproven missile defense system recently rushed into deployment to "fight terrorism" is a stepping stone to the SWC's orbital offense system, planned since the early 1980s, for zapping targets anywhere on Earth. SWC's motto? "In Your Face From Outer Space."
They spin and hide how the "free-market" and "free-trade" types of free enterprise, besides being rigged and not open and free, are flawed and unfair: if corporations and trade are not regulated by the public they become as dangerous to the common good as "free traffic" would be (streets and highways without traffic signals or laws or cops). They spin and hide how America heavily practices socialism (public-owned production of goods and services): our country has public-owned power utilities and water supplies and waste-management systems, public-owned transit systems, employee-owned credit unions and retirement systems, and so on, all to provide superior products and services at lower cost than corporations would, than privatization would.
They avoid the dead-accurate term "republic" (government in which supreme power lies in citizens who vote for representatives responsible to them) -- and they popularize the wishy-washy term "democracy" (government by majority rule) -- in order to hide how We the People have supreme power over the White House and Congress and Judiciary, to hide how the White House and Congress and Judiciary are responsible to We the People and to our posterity and for following the humanity and law in our Constitution.
Then, to exploit "democracy" to their advantage, they have their media machine inflate the integrity and size of the far right to make them seem like a moral democratic majority.
It is easy to tell right-wingers from conservatives on the basis of two "American" criteria. 1] Secularism and separation of church and state, in addition to being foundation principles of our Constitution, became supreme Law of the Land in 1797 ("[T]he government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion," 1797 Treaty of Tripoli, treaties are "supreme Law of the Land" per Article 6). 2] "We, the People... establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility [required for unity and cooperation], provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" became supreme Law of the Land in 1787; these five classes of common well-being are the humanitarian and moral foundations of our "more perfect Union" within which our pursuits of happiness and fortune can flourish. All true "Americans," conservatives and liberals, believe in these two items of supreme law. True conservatives and true liberals share this same "American" common ground. True conservatives want separation of church and state, never ask for religious judges to be appointed, and as elected public servants never entertain such requests or cater to them. True conservatives want corporations and government to serve the common good and to never hurt the common good. True conservatives also want religion to serve the common good, and for religion to never hurt the common good such as by weakening science and impairing critical thinking and removing humanity. True conservatives want secularism and plenty of common good just like true liberals do. Right-wingers don't. So-called 'conservatives' who DO want religion and government to combine, and who DO pressure government and corporations and religion to disserve the common good, are fake conservatives as right-wing and dangerous as the enemy of 1776.
During the late 1700s the East India Company, a large monopolistic corporation that enriched the wealthy and royalty of Britain, was subsidized by taxes from the American Colonies. In return to the citizens who paid those taxes, the corporation hurt them with cutthroat rigged trade. Which triggered the Boston Tea Party. It was a lesson and forewarning to our future America about the danger of allowing the wealthy and corporations and government to merge into a consolidated power.
During the late 1800s, a century after the birth of America, a new brand of Christianity emerged in Europe, Britain, and America: born-again Christian Zionism, the religion of today's Christian Right. Christian Zionists, followers of a radical small undercurrent that mainstream Christianity had been able to keep under control for nearly two thousand years, in the 19th century finally gained power and kicked off the Jewish Zionism movement needed to carry out their Book-of-Revelation "end times" prophecy: the Jewish people are to create a new Kingdom of Israel, expand it to the borders mapped in the Bible, subjugate/displace/exterminate Muslims and Arabs in the way, and at the end of a chain of events -- rise of Antichrist, battle of Armageddon, second coming of Christ, final Judgment, end of history -- everyone on Earth including Jews, Muslims, and traditional Christians must convert to born-again Christian Zionism and be raptured up to Heaven or else get left behind to die in a painful Divine genocide of all non-believers (vividly described in the best-selling "Left Behind" novels, over 60 million sold). Born-again Christian Zionism exploits the Jewish people as pawns toward mortal annihilation of humankind including the Jewish people, which shows how it is anti-Semitic, anti-Islamic, anti-Christian, and anti-humanity. (Judaism, thousands of years old, and Zionism, a little more than century old, are completely different; most of the world's Jews abhor Zionism.) During the Christian-Zionism push to make their interpretation of the Bible come true, they will hurt and kill great numbers of people. Which began a century ago. In the early 1900s Christian Zionism fused with the upper levels of the British government, who quickly promised the new multitudes of Jewish Zionists (before Christian Zionism emerged in the late 1800s, Jewish Zionism did not exist) a national home in Palestine (1917 Balfour Declaration) that excluded Palestinians as explained by Lord Balfour "... in Palestine we do not propose even to go through the form of consulting the wishes of the present inhabitants of the country... [Zionism's needs and hopes are] of far profounder import than the desires and prejudices of 700,000 Arabs who now inhabit that ancient land...," which led directly to the unrest and violence in the Middle East today. It was a lesson and forewarning to America about the horrifying danger of allowing the Christian Right to merge with state into a consolidated power.
From its 19th-century birth onward, the religion of the Christian Right helped to set in motion and fueled the historical chain of events that led to 9/11. Christian Zionism came decades before the Jewish Zionist movement (Zionism) did in the late 1800s, and gave assistance and power to it. In the early 1900s, emigrating Zionists began wresting land, water, agriculture, and control from the inhabitants of Palestine. Their Zionist terrorism against the Palestinian population triggered a defensive response in kind from Islamic Palestinians; that early Zionist terrorism against Muslims forced the birth of Islamic terrorism. (Great Britain was attacked by Zionist terrorists during World War 2; a terrorist leader they imprisoned in the early 1940s, Yitzhak Shamir, became Israel's prime minister in 1983.) For the Christian Right, the whole point of Israel (which they helped to create) is for Israel to set off the Apocalypse, and they trick US taxpayers to help Israel it: the Christian Right lobbies for massive US foreign aid to Israel which assists Zionist terrorism against Palestinians which fuels and grows Islamic terrorism, all needed to help trigger the "end-times" Armageddon they desire; that stealthy foreign-aid/biblical-prophecy endeavor, costing America about $2 trillion so far and $100 billion a year in federal-debt interest payments, began decades ago. The brewing of international Islamic terrorism by the USA and Saudi Arabia in Afghanistan/Pakistan during the 1980s, urged on by the Christian Right, led directly to 9/11.
Christian Zionism > Zionism > Zionist terrorism > Islamic terrorism > 9/11. Beneath their "homeland/family/moral values" cloak, the Christian Right strives for both kinds of terrorism to help reach their "end-times" goal.
Compared to mainstream Christianity including the traditional Christianity of our nation's founders and today's evangelical Christianity -- humane, hopeful, and humble Christianity -- the Christian Right's new brand of Christianity is inhumane, nihilistic, pushy and loud. Their "rapture index," an indicator of closeness to end times, rises in response to violence and calamity and suffering here and abroad. They exploit and foster misery and despair to "drive people to God," to sell "born again" religious conversion (become "born again" or else you or your buried body will get "left behind" when end times come), and to boost the size of their movement and strengthen their political grip on America. As revealed during a PBS interview with a member of the Christian Right, their version of God does not help people in need, only people with their faith. In essence, they gutted humanity from Christianity and replaced it with inhumanity. However to gain and take power, they need a humane public image. Which is why they hijacked the "conservative" and "evangelical Christian" labels. And why they promote themselves as being "Pro Life" for the unborn and brain-dead, which obscures how they are anti-life for the born and brain-alive. That right-wing Christianity violates the moral teachings of true Christianity and therefore is not Christian. They act against the moral values and supreme law in our Constitution, because that humanity and law thwarts quick attainment of the "end times" they yearn for. It is a minority religion in America, much smaller than mainstream Christianity. But due to its frequent and favorable media coverage (which vastly exceeds media coverage of much-larger mainstream Christianity and its top clergy), and due to its hijacked "conservative" and "evangelical Christian" labels and its deceptive "Pro-Life" mask, right-wing Christianity seems to be a popular wholesome religion in America.
I was an evangelical-Christian alter boy. In Sunday school and church we were taught to freely give goodness of many kinds to others, and to our future generations, wanting and expecting nothing in return. This bare-basic morality has nothing to do with being religious. It has everything to do with being a good human being. Years ago it was taught by many facets of the community, including by mass entertainment, popular Hollywood movies such as The Magnificent Seven. That true-Christian morality has much in common with the five-point secular moral system embodied in the first sentence of our Constitution, as do the moral beliefs and moral practices of most other religions throughout the world.
Already some American churches have dropped "evangelical" from their names to distance themselves from the right-wing strain of Christianity that stains "evangelical Christianity."
The wealth/corporate core of the homeland enemy -- the White House and Congress and much of the Judiciary, the wealth/corporate contributors of cash to Republicans/Democrats and to numerous influence groups (including the Commission on Presidential Debates), and right-wing institutes and societies and foundations and think tanks -- which is 0.2% of the public (a half-million voters), during the past quarter century recruited as their ally the entire Christian Right and their inhumane radical-right and hate groups, 10% of the public (30 million voters), to grow their electorate clout 50-fold. In addition to molding laws and regulations, federal budgets and spending, the federal judiciary, domestic policies, foreign policies including war, and public opinion to their liking as successfully as their wealth/corporate allies do, including through front organizations that fight abortion and the teaching of evolution, the Christian Right is infiltrating our military officer corps. That 10% right-wing minority, aided and abetted by their media machine, controls and exploits and harms America's 90% conservative-and-liberal majority. But due to their frequent and favorable media coverage, and their hijacked "conservative" label, they seem to be a patriotic righteous majority doing good for America.
Today's White House and Congress service wealth/corporate clients in exchange for their campaign cash, and they service Christian-Right clients in exchange for their election votes -- at the social, economic, and bodily expense of We the People and our posterity. How much do the wealthy and Corporate America get for their campaign cash? $800 billion a year in tax relief and subsidies. $300 billion a year in tax cheating as the White House and Congress look the other way. A stealthy degradation of our taxation system from the fair system of the past -- taxes shared by capital and labor, taxes based on ability to pay with graduated taxes -- toward an unfair system with no taxes on corporate income or investment income (dividends, interest, capital gains), all taxes in the future to be flat taxes on labor and employee income (wages, tips, salaries, commissions) and flat taxes on citizen consumption (sales taxes, excise taxes, use taxes and fees), whereby the poor and middle class are to pay a much higher percentage of their income on local/state/federal taxes than the wealthy and corporations do, whereby the wealthy and corporations are to pay little for the operation of our nation, whereby the poor and middle class are to pay for nearly all of it. Myriad laws/regulations/deregulations/privatizations that allow them to freely mine our national wealth (US Treasury, Social Security and Medicare and veterans benefits other public trust funds, public lands, natural resources) and our citizen wealth (tax-fleecing and corporate-gouging of citizens such as Medicare Part D that's designed to hugely profit the pharmaceutical industry at taxpayer expense, pension defaults, investment fraud, high-cost consumer credit where banks borrow from us [from our US Treasury] at ultra-low rates and then loan it back to us at 35% credit-card rates and 500% payday-loan rates and fees, high-cost college education, high-cost healthcare and medications, systematic weakening of consumer protection and legal recourse, several forms of Enroning that drive up the costs of basic services), all without having to be liable for the immense social/economic/bodily harm they cause. Likewise, they are busily mining the national wealth and citizen wealth of other countries including through the World Bank/IMF headquartered in America. Billions of dollars in profiteering from bomb-it-then-rebuilt-it privatized war, from manufactured homeland fear and its rapidly growing homeland-security industry, from natural disasters by removing emergency-preparedness and competitive-bidding from FEMA which grows a high profit disaster-relief industry, from the unproven missile defense system recently rushed into deployment to "fight terrorism" but planned since the early 1980s as a stepping stone to the even pricier orbital offense system for zapping targets on Earth ("In Your Face From Outer Space" is the motto of the Space Warfare Center slated to operate it). The overall effect is a Reverse Robin Hooding of America: a mass transfer of wealth from today's ordinary taxpayers, and from our posterity through deficit spending and federal borrowing, to large corporations and the wealthy. That upflow of wealth is growing into a torrent, the result of "trickle-down" economics that began in the 1980s. Even Congress is taking our wealth: just ask them to make public the secret details of their ultra-lavish retirement package that their employers, We the People and our posterity, will pay out to them even if they become lobbyists or felons. And more. In short they are creating a tax system, deficit-spending system, legal/tort system, justice-prison system (discussed later in this document), privatization system (transfer of public enterprises and assets into private ownership), financial system, healthcare system, education system (also discussed later on), social-services system, emergency-response system, fear system, national-defense system, homeland-security system, perk system, free-market-democracy system as well as other systems that transfer more and more earnings and assets of ordinary citizens up into the coffers of wealth and power. All in a vastly more corrupt and vastly more harmful rerun of the events, including federal money-laundering of citizen taxes to corporations and the wealthy, that triggered the Boston Tea Party and American Revolution two-and-a-third centuries ago. Their return on campaign-cash investment often exceeds 1000-to-1. How much does the Christian Right get in return for their block of votes? Federal spending to help fast-track their end times prophecy including $2 trillion so far in aid to Israel that was borrowed from our posterity to foster the Christian Zionism they need; the interest payment on that one-fourth of our national debt is $100 billion a year and the $800 average share per taxpayer is in essence an annual Christian-Right religious tax. Progress toward laws that define human life as beginning at and having legal rights at conception, toward laws outlaw homosexuality, toward laws that weaken the power of science and corrode reasoning ability of the public, and in mutual cooperation with the wealth/corporate core toward laws that further hurt women, workers, minorities, health and safety, social and economic opportunity, the middle class, the poor, our posterity, the environment -- that is, progress toward more and stronger laws that would force their religion onto America and create hardships that would boost their rapture index, toward laws that are increasingly Pro-Life for the unborn and Anti-Life for the born. Increased federal spending on pet religious causes of the Christian Right. And more. The Christian Right (radical Christianity) is fast becoming Christianity's version of Islam's Wahabiism (radical Islam), the Christian Right to America is fast becoming what Wahabiism is to Saudi Arabia. This frightening and deadly rise of religious inhumanity was forewarned by the Framers in the late 1700s and then again by history only a century ago. Both political parties cater more and more to wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients, and less and less to the American public, Republicans more so than Democrats. The Republican-Democratic White House and Congress, their two clients, and their mass-media persuasion machine recruit and lure many others in America to serve and support them: increasingly our court judges willfully, and our troops largely inadvertently, serve the wealthy and corporations and the Christian Right at the expense of the rest of us and our future generations, and as pied pipers they mislead adults and our young to lend patriotic and moral support to their immense subversion and harm. By doing it as a consolidated team the White House and Congress and Judiciary violate separation of powers, and by acting in allegiance with the Christian Right they violate separation of church and state. Thus America no longer has representative or principled governance. Or a fair and honest press.
A closer look at the Christian Right's wish list for laws and enforcement/punishment regarding abortion, science education, and sexuality: A huge percentage of all naturally-conceived human embryos naturally abort soon after fertilization (Discover magazine); it's one of nature's ways of helping our species to survive. Would new laws on behalf of the Christian Right require inquests and death certificates for all those losses of microscopic human life, which would at least double America's official death rate to be at least twice as high as our birth rate? Similar to how abortion today eases mother-family hardship and societal burden, abortion was practiced by our ancient forebears in hard times to assure survival of the family and of the community and thus survival of our species (as determined by anthropologists), hence millions of people today (undoubtedly including members of the Christian Right) owe their existence to abortions performed as a survival measure many millennia before Abrahamic monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, Islam) began four thousand years ago and even longer before any words of the Bible were ever written. Would new laws on behalf of the Christian Right ban those facts from science and history? Today the facts and theory of evolution are applied to improve food production and disease control and to obtain cures for injury and disease, just as the facts and theories of gravity and electromagnetism and other branches of science are applied to benefit humankind. Would new public-education laws regarding "intelligent design" -- their new label for "creationism" -- obfuscate, discredit, and weaken the sciences we now heavily depend on for survival? The first Olympians, 800 BC, engaged in the natural human practice of homosexuality long before much of the Bible was written (PBS, The Real Olympics). Would new laws on behalf of the Christian Right require our history books to abominate those laurelled ancient heroes? The spectrum of human sexuality ranges from homosexual to bisexual/transsexual to heterosexual. Some of most stunningly-beautiful female fashion models in the world have been male. Warmly loving gay/lesbian couples, and the wise and humane children they raise, are role models for how to be and bring up good human beings. Would new laws on behalf of the Christian Right deny legal rights and human rights to all persons not at their preferred end of the broad sexuality spectrum?
Are special-interest laws -- laws that serve wealth/corporate or Christian-Right interests at the expense of the public interest -- legal? Such laws hurt the public interest -- they hurt our democratic processes, representative governance, justice, unity and cooperation, homeland/national security, the general welfare, and liberty -- and thus do not pursue our Constitution. The litmus test for validity of law exists in Article 6: "This Constitution, and all Laws of the United States which shall be made in Pursuance thereof... shall be the supreme Law of the Land." Thus the purpose of American law is to pursue the public interest as defined by our Constitution. Hence laws that hurt the public interest are not legal. Harmful special-interest laws passed by the legislative branch and ratified by the executive branch are therefore subject to invalidation by court judges and citizen juries as vital civic duty.
About the two major political parties: Red and blue are two flavors of the same political monopoly that blocks everything and everyone they see as a threat to their monopoly including truth, reforms, and fresh political blood that would all greatly benefit America. As public servants, blues act more humanely and more lawfully than reds. That difference, of course, is obscured by the pious/moral/patriotic mask worn by reds -- and by the media's incessant harsh treatment of blues for being too "liberal," that is, for being more humane and more lawful in accordance with our Constitution.
"We, the People... promote the general Welfare... to ourselves and our Posterity" is an American moral value listed in the Preamble. That moral value, since it is part of our Constitution, is supreme Law of the Land. Think of it as a Commandment of America, one of the Five. But it ranks low in the value system of wealthy Corporate America, evidenced by how they loot and hurt citizens and our future generations without remorse. Members of the Christian Right condone that inhumanity, and yearn and act for a near future where everyone is raptured up or exterminated by the Apocalypse that would prevent new generations from ever being born including their own, and thus prove how "promote the general Welfare... to ourselves and our Posterity" is entirely missing from the moral values of their religion. The White House, Congress, Judiciary, Republicans and Democrats, and our press -- as backers and supporters of wealthy Corporate America and the Christian Right -- exhibit a similar lack of concern for the welfare of We the People and our posterity.
A startling consequence of that consolidation of inhumanity at the top? America now has a higher percentage of its population behind bars than all other nations in the world including those we brand as evil. If Texas were a nation it would top the list. Largely minorities and the poor are incarcerated, mostly for non-violent lesser offenses. Many are housed in for-profit prisons, a taxpayer-funded growth industry that feeds off homeland-enemy cuts to "the general Welfare." The social-and-economic breakdown and despair seemingly engineered by the right wing, and the desperate acts by victims to cope and survive, funnel offenders right into a trap of tough-on-crime sentencing laws for minor and minority crimes. Our nation's major offenders, well-off members of the homeland enemy, get off scot-free.
Instead of setting sterling examples for the noble human behavior enshrined in the first sentence of our Constitution, our corrupt leaders, rogue corporations, dishonest press, irresponsible PR and advertising, lowbrow and violent entertainment especially video gaming, hate radio, and un-Christian Christianity all foster base human behavior. In symbiotic cooperation they breed inhumanity into America. It trickles down from the top and pressures into adults and children. It pressures Americans to be selfish, unfair, deceptive, dishonest, personally and socially irresponsible, uncaring, intolerant, divisive, rude, aggressively competitive, combative, belligerent, domineering, and rageful (such as on the road). It is persuading the public to acquire the inhumanity of the right. Besides directly hurting "the general Welfare" it is erasing the concept of "common good" from America, and it is disabling the ability America to care about "ourselves and our Posterity."
Exposure to "Violent Media" when young -- movies, TV, video games especially -- is second only to "Gang Membership" in breeding aggressive and violent behavior into male and female adults. Although the danger to individuals and the common good have been known for decades, why are violent movies and TV shows and video games being marketed? "It's like the tobacco industry. It took court case after court case until finally the momentum shifted and the industry had to acknowledge that marketing this product was harmful to people." (Michigan Today, Summer 2006.)
Reports exposing the effects of violent media fail to explain how the members of consolidated wealth-and-power hugely profit from violent media other than from lucrative sales. Violent media helps to breed unity-and-cooperation toward the common good out of the public, which helps wealth-and-power to divide-and-conquer America. Violent media breeds aggressive and inhumane mentality into people, mentality that consolidated wealth-and-power needs in the citizens who serve them, especially in those who wear business suits and military uniforms.
That trickle-down breeding of inhumanity is helping the right wing to morph America's value system from the one in our Constitution -- "We, the People," by living the principles and law in our Constitution, "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" -- into the value system of the wealth-and-power disease -- "Do whatever it takes to gain and hoard wealth and power, even at the immense expense of others and the public good." Also, the trickle-down inhumanity is helping the right to morph our principled "American" democracy into a rigged "free-market" democracy that guarantees election results which foster growth of consolidated wealth and power and escalation of its lawbreaking and inhumanity here and abroad.
Broad and deep violations of "the general Welfare" by America's unchecked wealth and power -- the multiple wounds causing the social, economic, health, and safety breakdowns in America -- comprise just ONE basic type of violation of our Constitution. The enemy within is hurting the REST of our special American democracy as well: our democratic processes, representative governance, and the four other classes of common well-being. To visualize that big picture, and to see the full solution, read the paragraph below.
To draw the big picture in your mind (or on paper in outline or chart form) of what's happening to America -- and to draw the big picture of what We the People can do to solve the overall problem and to heal America -- first sketch in the Civics 101 of what America is supposed to be all about: "We, the People," the government of America and supreme power in America operating in accordance with our Constitution, through democratic processes and representative governance "establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility [required for unity and cooperation], provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." The Bill of RIGHTS helps us out with the "secure the Blessings of Liberty" portion. In the Preamble, however, is a five-point Bill of RESPONSIBILITIES to carry out justice, unity-and-cooperation, common-defense, general-welfare, and liberty civic duties. That Bill of Responsibilities is far more important to our common good, and is a far more powerful legal tool for We the People (it is "supreme Law of the Land," see Article 6), than our Bill of Rights. This is the essence of true American democracy, the principled heart and soul of America that every citizen, every leader, and every media outlet is obligated to pitch in and strive for. Then, sketch in the demographics of We the People (conservative and liberal citizens who want our Constitution to be lived up to) and the demographics of the homeland enemy (those who violate our Constitution to gain and hoard wealth and power without concern for harm they cause) and compare the huge size differences: show how the 90% conservative-and-liberal majority of Americans being hurt by the 10% homeland-enemy minority is 500-times larger than the enemy's wealth/corporate core (0.2% of the public) that controls the entire homeland enemy including the Christian Right; the Christian Right wouldn't have any power if the wealth/corporate core didn't exchange big favors with them and if our mass media didn't pump them up to look patriotic, moral, and popular. Do all this, perhaps in outline form, perhaps with flow charts and pie charts, to illustrate how the entire homeland enemy is vulnerable during elections: how more than 200 million votes from the conservative-and-liberal majority of ordinary citizens would overwhelm the 1/2 million votes from the wealth/corporate minority, and how votes from humane mainstream Christians would overwhelm the 30 million votes from the inhumane Christian Right. After you sketch in the above Civics 101, after you sketch in the demographics of We the People and the homeland enemy, fill in the rest of the big picture: step by step collect and record all of the assaults and wounds to each and every part of our true American democracy being inflicted by the homeland enemy and their media machine: assaults and wounds to our democratic processes, to our representative governance, to our justice, to our domestic tranquility and unity and cooperation, to our homeland/national security, to our general welfare, to our liberty, to our posterity. Collect and list ALL of them. Precisely categorize and explain how they violate (in technicality and spirit) the Preamble, Articles, Amendments, and foundation principles of separation of powers and separation of church and state. Next, sketch in the long-overdue rerun of 1776: bring that list to the entire American public and declare corrective civic action, and let moral disgust, moral outrage, and unity and cooperation take charge just like before, to return America to the secular, humane, lawful self-governing nation defined by the Constitution that our nation's founders wrote after American Revolution I -- that's the first part of the four-element full solution summarized in the conclusion. Read to the end to fill in the big picture and to see the rest of the full solution.
CivicPowerUSA.org has recorded and categorized some of those assaults and wounds. It is up to the rest of America -- a broad-based cooperative union of concerned citizens and groups -- to complete the list. Thomas Jefferson placed such a list, about the right-wing enemy of 1776, into our Declaration of Independence which launched the creation of America and our Constitution. Today we need a similar list, about similar right-wing enemy, in a similar declaration for a similar purpose (see conclusion).
Their greatest wound to our homeland/national security -- that is, to the security of our principled democracy and bountiful common good -- comes from their assault on civics education. Due to pressures from the homeland enemy, our public schools are not free to teach the morality and law and responsibility embodied in the Preamble of our Constitution, or the many other beneficial and empowering items of supreme law in our Constitution (the real First Amendment, not today's popular understanding of it, is just one of the items) or important early American history including what caused Colonial Americans to revolt and create our nation in the first place. A few consequences of that erasure of civic understanding? America no longer knows that the Articles and Amendments and foundation principles are the supreme-law means by which We the People, through democratic processes and representative governance, achieve the whole point of America stated in the Preamble: a "more perfect Union" with plenty of leeway for individuals and corporations to freely pursue happiness and fortune within the union's minimum requirements of "Justice," "domestic Tranquility," "common defence," "general Welfare," and "Liberty" for "ourselves and our Posterity." As anyone can easily see by reading its first sentence, our Constitution goes far beyond the moral principle, "Do as you will but harm none." It says, "Do as you will, but in the process do good for the common good and for our posterity." That moral essence of America, once the patriotic common ground of all citizens, is no longer taught and is hardly understood or practiced anymore. America no longer understands the social contract that began when Colonial Americans organized local self-governance and taxed themselves to provide common-well-being benefits to themselves: in return for efforts made and taxes paid by We the People during our principled self-governance of America, we receive bountiful common well-being for ourselves and our posterity. America no longer knows the key lesson of the Boston Tea Party: never combine corporation and state, and always regulate the behavior of corporations so they serve and not hurt democracy and the common good in a way that serves profit fairly also. America no longer knows that "corporate personhood," a belief that corporations were created equal to people and possess inalienable rights like people do, was preposterous and anathema to America's founders. America no longer knows what comes right after the opening phrases of our Declaration of Independence: a long list of injustices, committed by the wealth-and-power enemy of 1776 described in the declaration, that are remarkably similar to the injustices being inflicted on America by today's wealth-and-power enemy within. America no longer knows about our country's affirmation of secularism and separation of church and state, "[T]he government of the United States of America is not in any sense founded on the Christian religion" (contained in 1797 Treaty of Tripoli), which became supreme Law of the Land in 1797 without complaint from the public (Article 6 of our Constitution: treaties are supreme law of the Land). America no longer knows why the Framers feared "God and Country" and wisely made it illegal: to prevent God-and-Country inhumanity such as Crusades and Inquisition by America. America no longer knows that treaties are supreme Law of the Land, and how when the White House, Congress, and US military violate the United Nations Charter treaty, Nuremberg Charter treaty, and Geneva Conventions treaty they violate Article 6 of our Constitution also. (In regard to Iraq they violated all three treaties, their news machine suppresses it, they vilify dissenters who try to expose it, and they adamantly oppose the International Criminal Court that could convict members of the White House and Congress and US military for those crimes.) American citizens no longer know about their supreme power and supreme duty as members of a jury: laws not made in pursuance of our Constitution -- such as laws and regulations made in pursuance of wealth/corporate and Christian-Right goals, that is, laws and regulations that hurt democratic processes, representative governance, justice, unity and cooperation, homeland/national security, the general welfare, or liberty of ourselves or posterity -- are NOT supreme Law of the Land and therefore are subject to dutiful nullification by juries. Not knowing these history and citizenship basics handicaps the ability of We the People to defend America against the homeland enemy -- the very purpose of having those basics purged from our public schools and public mind.
Our Constitution teaches us about our "special American democracy" -- which is very different from and vastly superior to "generic majority-is-right democracy" -- and about human nature itself. Besides We the People being innately capable of carrying out principled self-governance, We the People are innately capable of providing bountiful common good including to our future generations: "We, the People... establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity." This has nothing to do with being good humans beings in a religious sense. It has everything to with being good human beings in a civic and secular sense. This bright view of human nature -- people are naturally good, not naturally bad -- is embodied in our Constitution. This bright view of We the People is a hallmark of being "American."
The five-point secular moral system in our Constitution's first sentence -- "We, the People... establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity" -- is "supreme Law of the Land" (US Constitution Article 6) that eloquently prohibits inhumanity. Thus being inhuman to fellow citizens or to our posterity, in ways that harm any of America's five types of common good, is illegal.
Being inhuman abroad violates our Constitution also. Blowback from exploiting Muslims as Cold-War cannon fodder in Afghanistan in the 1980s, and blowback from torturing Muslims abroad today, hurts our national security and well as our other types of common good. The total backlash from America's many other past-and-present acts of inhumanity abroad -- inhuman covert operations and military actions, inhuman foreign policies, inhuman global trade practices -- hurts us also.
You don't have to be religious to have "values." Being secular can be deeply humane. For example, the first sentence of our secular Constitution contains a stronger set of moral values -- a stronger code of humanity and social responsibility, a stronger code for humans to provide goodness to others -- than most religions do.
Being religious is not proof of being moral. For example the overall influence of the pious Christian Right, which claims to have "values," has been to make our nation less humane and thus less "American."
If all Americans were well-educated in Civics 101, we would patriotically think and act as one like this: In our public places and public lives, we would replace the Ten Commandments with the secular Five Commandments of America which direct us to provide vastly MORE human-to-human goodness than the religious commandments do. On our courthouse walls above and behind judges and on our currency, we would replace "In God We Trust" with "In We the People We Trust" or "In our Constitution We Trust" or with a combination of both mottos. We would remove "so help me God" from all oaths -- it is not in the President's oath: see Article 2, Section 1 of our Constitution -- in part so that in our courts of justice non-believers would not be forced to lie, to feign belief in God, as they take the oath to tell the truth. We would correct and complete our Pledge of Allegiance: we would replace "under God" with "under We the People and our Constitution," and to the list of "liberty and justice for all" we would add the three other classes of common well-being and how all that goodness is for our posterity also. Why would we do all this? To protect and preserve America: to prevent religion from ever hurting us and our posterity.
In America we are free to pursue happiness and fortune, and to think and say and do as we please -- within the few limits set by the first sentence of our Constitution: we are NOT free to jeopardize or act against our principled self-governance, we are NOT free to endanger and harm others or the common good or our posterity, and we are NOT free to lose vigilance and fail to protect and preserve our democracy and common well-being. This is bare-basic good citizenship. With our freedom comes social responsibility. If we fail in that civic duty we will lose what America stands for and what America has accomplished, including our many freedoms, to a new strain of the same wealth-and-power disease that Colonial America revolted against to create our nation. As if to foster that civic failure, as if to foster that loss of democracy and loss of common good, the right-wing homeland enemy, through their many stealthy methods of exerting influence, has banned this old civics lesson from being taught and practiced in today's America. Worry not. We the People can heal this deep wound (see conclusion).
When the homeland enemy started to form around 1980, they began to build a persuasion machine. They combined advertising, public relations, journalism, and entertainment into mass-media "communication" machine that serves the aims of the right wing (do whatever it takes to gain and hoard wealth-and-power even at the immense expense of others and the common good) and not the aims of the public interest (principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being for ourselves and our posterity). They stripped the FCC's Fairness Doctrine and public-service requirements from broadcasting which gave rise to radical-right religious and hate broadcasting. They removed the FCC's restrictions on media consolidation and then merged broadcasting stations and other types of media companies into a few giant media corporations, which conglomerated with other corporations that sell a wide range of products and services, who in symbiosis with the rest of the right control media content to their liking. Thus more and more of our news and entertainment promotes Corporate America and the wealthy, competition for selfish gain, the Christian Right, faith-based science and thought, right-wing personalities and views, and free-market democracy (a fairly-new type of democracy where candidates and issues are "products," where "majority-is-right" outcomes are always good for wealth-and-power but often bad for the general public); media coverage of lower-income citizens, cooperation for the common good, mainstream religion, science and reason, progressive personalities and views, and real American democracy (principled democracy in accordance with the humanity and law in our Constitution) has become less frequent and less sympathetic. Programming young minds toward the right, especially toward inhumanity, including for military recruiting purposes, has crept into TV and film and video games. White House propagandists, and right-wing operatives posing as reporters and independent sources, supply PR-designed content to newspapers and broadcasters who falsely present it as real news. Increasingly our news is sourced from or prepared by right-wing institutes and think tanks. The right extorts public broadcasting to shift to the right: turn right or lose more public funding from Congress. The information the public needs to function as a true American democracy is systematically prevented from reaching the public. The few messages of vital truth that do break through are gunned down by the media and so are the messengers. It's one of the ways they enforce their New American Civility: always be positive about wealthy-and-powerful people no matter what they do, for it is negative and wrong to hold them accountable. They even persuaded Hollywood to pitch in with programming that builds public adulation of wealth-and-power and God-and-Country, with programming that helps the right wing control America through fear, with programming that corrodes the ability of steady viewers to care about the common good or to be socially-responsible good citizens. Thus our citizens have a limited and distorted sense what's happening here and abroad, thus our citizens have a dangerously-twisted understanding of democracy and patriotism, thus our citizens have been manipulated to be less able to self-govern America toward the common good, the whole point. Today all forms of mass media -- print, radio, television, film, news and entertainment, corporate-owned and public-owned -- operate as a giant right-wing persuasion team to manipulate America's public mind to make it easy to take and hoard wealth and power at the expense of others and the public good. Aided by their ruse of being Liberal Media. They formed -- and control -- a mass-media information monopoly that fosters destruction of principled self-governance and common well-being. They are beginning the rig the internet in similar fashion for the same purpose. This is one of the many ways the homeland enemy impairs America's democratic processes.
A tiny sampling of media-machine dishonesties against America's democratic processes:
Crawford Ranch is not a Bush-family homestead. The land was purchased in 1999 and the house was built in 2000 just before the 2000 elections to create a tall-in-the-saddle Texas-rancher image for George W. Bush and to be a photo-op set. It was a small-time cattle ranch. The ranch's cattle belong to the previous owner, who helps run the place. Besides not being a rancher, Bush doesn't ride horses either. If our press had exposed this phoniness instead of passing off the lie as truth, if our press had exposed the man's deceptive character instead of portraying it as wholesome character, we would have a different President and a better and safer America today.
The Commission on Presidential Debates is a private corporation created by the Republican and Democratic parties. It is funded by corporations who give campaign money to both parties. Only Republican and Democratic candidates are allowed to participate in the debates. Candidates from all other parties are locked out. All mass-media news outlets, acting in symbiotic cooperation, dupe the public into believing that the Commission is a taxpayer-funded federal commission run fairly.
How powerfully can the right shape our public mind with advertising, public relations, media control, and education control? Consider the modern Olympic Games. Look at how the 1] torch relay, 2] torch ceremony, 3] five olympic rings, and 4] big-stadium spectacle all stick in our minds as being ancient practices of the original olympic games in Greece. However all four practices are historically fictitious, all four were brand-new for Nazi-Germany's 1936 Olympics, all four were invented by the Third Reich's propaganda machine (PBS, The Real Olympics), all four were imprinted into our public mind by our homeland version of the Nazi's propaganda machine.
The Nazi propaganda machine -- a machine that controlled the thinking and behavior of citizens, a machine that enlisted help from the public by manufacturing fear (of Jews), a machine that controlled public speech and print/airwave content and public education -- admired and applied techniques developed by America's Madison-Avenue "fathers" of propaganda, spin, and public relations. One "father" met with Hitler and Goebbels, and his American ad/PR firm conducted business in Nazi Germany. Today that same agency does ad/PR work for the homeland enemy. So do other Madison-Avenue agencies. So do the spin-doctor, perception-management, information-warfare, and psychological-operation units run by the White House, the federal-government propaganda units similar in function to Nazi Germany's. Also in today's America, like in Nazi Germany about 75 years ago, the homeland enemy's propaganda machine manufactures fear (of Islamics) to control citizens and to enlist their support, and more and more they control free speech and media content and public education. Three of the right's most stunning brainwashing successes, each equalling the Nazi's mind-control feat about the Olympic Games? They made us think that invading and occupying Iraq is about providing safety to America and democracy to Iraq. They made us believe that terrorism from abroad is our biggest threat. They made the first sentence of our Constitution -- the goals and values of our republic including America's five-point secular moral code, the supreme purpose of democratic effort including the foremost duty of free speech, the supreme responsibilities of every citizen and leader, the patriotic common ground of all conservatives and liberals, the official agenda of our country, the true national interest, all of it "supreme Law of the Land" according to Article 6 of our Constitution -- disappear from our public mind.
How else do they hurt our democratic processes? The Republican-Democratic political monopoly, assisted by their mass-media information monopoly, select and limit our democratic choices: candidates and issues that pose threats to the power of the homeland enemy are prevented from being mentioned or treated fairly in the media, and are blocked from getting onto ballots. Virtually all media information -- and virtually all democratic choices -- today side with the homeland enemy. Therefore no matter who we vote for, chances are they'll serve the homeland enemy and not We the People. Then, during the actual voting process, they engage in several underhanded activities -- suppressing liberal voter turnout especially from poor and minority neighborhoods, blocking poor and minority voters at the polls with psychological and physical intimidation and with voter purge lists, tampering with the count in computerized elections, having their court judges stop the count -- to tilt the vote away from blue and toward red. Today our democratic processes are heavily rigged to favor those who subvert and hurt America, and are additionally rigged toward the red flavor that is more harmful to America.
America no longer has a free press. Journalists are not free to be vigilant watchdogs of America's democracy and common good anymore, such as to expose how the right wing is subverting our democracy and hurting our common good. Our press no longer reports the wrongdoing that the public needs to know about in order to keep America safe from powerful, well-disguised public enemies. The brave few who do attempt to fulfill that vital patriotic duty are often punished by the newspapers and broadcasters who employ them. The homeland enemy cannot allow a free press because a free press would bring down the homeland enemy. If the press of 1776 was in bed with the enemy -- as is the press of today -- America's first patriots, incendiary dissenters, and our strongly-worded Declaration of Independence, perhaps the greatest document of dissent ever written, would have received only scant and hostile mention in the news.
Job #1 of American journalism seems to have pretty much sunk to this. On the court of public opinion, play the spin-balls to create wins for the White House and Congress and their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients. Hide the essence of the game: how the press assists wealth-and-power to control and plunder America AND to disable the ability of We the People to stop it.
In violation of "insure domestic Tranquility," the homeland enemy insures domestic discord in order to divide and conquer America, clearly evidenced by how they and their media machine incessantly pit conservatives and liberals against each other. They sliced and diced our electorate into divisive and competing self-interests, they fuel that division and discord, which prevents individuals and organizations from uniting and cooperating to defend America against threats from within.
How finely do they slice and dice the common-good whole into bits of self-interest? From The Persuaders, PBS Frontline: "Instead of being Americans, we're sliced into 70 demographic groups... [and] into hundreds of subcategories under that... the worry is that we don't share anything as a people." "The result is [that we're now] living in a society where people, rather than having an idea of the common good, increasingly see their own [selfish] well-being... as the essential issue of democracy."
How effectively do they insure domestic discord to divide and conquer America? Conservatives and liberals seem caught up in the "free-market democracy" manufactured and sold by the right and their media machine: cater to your conservative or liberal market niche, and compete among yourselves -- conservatives against liberals, liberals against conservatives, conservatives against conservatives, liberals against liberals -- to grow sales of your narrowly-targeted political products. Conservatives and liberals seem totally incapacitated by the right's divide-and-conquer manipulation, unable to rally conservatives and liberals to team up into an immense invincible force to assail and defeat the tiny right wing that's immensely hurting them both, helpless to even THINK about the concept of uniting and cooperating for the common good. Through irresponsible use of advertising/PR/news/entertainment media power, the right wing skillfully manipulates conservatives and liberals by the tens of millions to HELP the right wing divide and conquer America. That's how the right is rapidly making sure that We the People cannot live up to the first word in our country's name: "United." If the right divides and conquers our nation much further, the United States of America will no longer be in the state of being united enough to cooperate or care for itself.
To further weaken the ability of "We, the People" to "provide for the common defence," they trick our public mind in other skillful ways. They manipulate us to focus intently on just the play-by-play (news of the moment), to be utterly blind to the underlying game. They manipulate us not to see how the past affects and teaches the future, not to see events coming, to see them only as they pop up into the here-and-now, to quickly forget them, to never assemble the many events into a clear past-to-future broad overall picture like the founders of America did to prepare our nation's Charters of Freedom. They manipulate us to react to scattered bits and pieces of the overall problem facing America today, to react to one little piece of the problem at time and with only a fragment of civic power, so that each and every diluted and weak civic effort is singled out and then easily brushed off or crushed by the right's full might, to never plan or mount a broad-based full solution to fix America as resolutely as the founders did to create America. They manipulate us to see and treat isolated symptoms of today's ailing America, not to see the underlying cause (consolidated wealth-and-power and their media machine), not to apply the full cure the Framers wrote into our Constitution.
Due to the homeland enemy's multiple deep wounds to our democracy -- to our civics education, to our unity and cooperation, to our democratic processes, to our representative governance -- our methods of good citizenship and political action that worked so well in the past -- reading and watching the news to stay informed, supporting just causes, working on vital civic issues, whistleblowing in the public interest, engaging in principled dissent, writing to our Senators and Congressman, voting in every election -- barely work anymore. The whole point. It frees the enemy to do as they please with our country, with our citizens, and with our treasury that we and our posterity fill for them.
Instead of government of, by, and for We the People, America now has government of, by, and for the homeland enemy.
Besides taking our self-governance they are taking our money, about $2 trillion a year in tax fleecing and corporate gouging (about $15,000 per taxpayer a year), and our lives, at least 50,000 a year. That looting and collateral damage, happening within our borders right under our noses, are just two of their numerous assaults on "the general Welfare" of America. They are also attacking and wounding the four other kinds of common well-being: justice, unity and cooperation, homeland/national security, and liberty. Our posterity is a victim, too. The lookout and getaway car? America's mass media. The members of that media team skillfully make sure that America can't see -- and doesn't see -- the horrifying big picture.
During 2001, 30,000 died in America from un-enforcement of pollution-control laws, 20,000 died because they could not afford the jacked-up cost of healthcare, 10,000 died from adverse side effects of one drug alone (Vioxx), and every year from a decade before and every year since roughly 3,000 died from the media-manipulated switch from cars and minivans to less-safe (more-profitable) pickups and SUVs. That partial tally indicates how the homeland enemy, aided by their media machine, is killing off fellow Americans at a far higher average rate than Saddam Hussein killed off Iraqis and Kurds.
Also during 2001, 3,000 died from the still-loaded jihad military weapon that the White House and Congress recklessly bred then threw away in the 1980s.
The homeland enemy and their media machine ignore the vast number of homeland deaths -- at least 500,000 during the past decade, a large city's worth of lives, about two hundred 9/11s -- inflicted by their inhuman domestic practices here. But they heavily exploit the 3,000 homeland deaths during the past decade caused by their inhuman foreign practice abroad: creation of a Muslim jihad weapon to fight the Cold War on their behalf in the 1980s which a decade-and-a-half later aimed and fired itself at America on 9/11. They constantly exploit those 3,000 9/11 deaths -- less than 0.5% of the total number of homeland deaths they caused during the past decade -- to create a fear-driven cash machine for their defense-industry clients and homeland-security-industry clients, to recruit and motivate a revenge-for-9/11 US military, to boost the size and clout of their Christian-Right clients who see 9/11 and Iraq conflict and mounting terrorism as wondrous signs of a coming Apocalypse, to cover up and execute their right-wing plans to financially starve our federal and state governments, and to manipulate the public to give up democracy and justice and general welfare and liberty in return for a feel-good illusion of homeland/national security. All to take and hoard more wealth and power. Every "Remember 9/11" sticker gives them permission and strength to pull it off.
Originally, freedom of speech and freedom of the press meant "freedom" -- as in not being arrested or jailed or physically punished for it -- to warn about and call for action against threats and harm to our country and citizens. But the homeland enemy cheapened the meaning of that freedom, and they twisted the practice of that freedom. Today, freedom of speech and of the press is a selfish and destructive kind of freedom that is not in any sense connected with its original deep sense of social responsibility to protect and preserve principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being. Today, the wealthy and large corporations have the First-Amendment right to hurt our democracy and common good with campaign-contribution money to buy what they want from the White House and Congress, their media machine has the First-Amendment right to hurt us with a right-biased information monopoly that suppresses and punishes the true freedom of speech and true freedom of the press guaranteed by our First Amendment, and We the People don't have the First-Amendment right to voice alarms about it or cry out to stop it. Today, there is far more freedom of speech for those who hurt America than for those who wish to heal America.
They also twisted the meaning and practice of unity and cooperation. Today, we are taught and herded to unite and cooperate toward what the right-wing enemy wants. Today, acts of unity and cooperation toward achieving humanity and law in our Constitution are often branded as acts of terrorism.
The Framers tried to prevent unbridled wealth and power, an ancient political disease, from flaring up and spreading and taking over and hurting America. They created a redundant protection system and embedded it in supreme law: Full, unfettered, open democratic processes -- and transparent, responsive, truly representative governance -- to keep the wealth-and-power disease in check and thus America a republic. "[I]nsure domestic Tranquility" so that citizens don't pit themselves against each other, to keep We the People able to unite and cooperate to fight the disease. "[P]rovide for the common defence" against the disease. "[N]o religious Test[s]" to prevent religion in public servants and other members of the public trust from feeding the disease. Trial by jury as a direct citizen check against unjust prosecution and unjust courts and unjust laws spawned by the disease (juries have a supreme duty to nullify bad laws not "made in Pursuance [of]" our Constitution). Separation of powers, and separation of church and state, to prevent separate components of wealth and power from consolidating and growing into the disease. Freedom of speech, and freedom of the press, to sound alarms about the disease and to call for citizen action to fight and cure the disease. Those several homeland/national-security measures, written into our Constitution by the Framers, were intended to protect and preserve America. The homeland enemy overrode all of them.
They morphed our principled special American democracy, where ordinary citizens and elected leaders all cooperate to achieve our "more perfect Union" and its five classes of common well-being in accordance with the supreme-law rules in our Constitution's Articles and Amendments, into a rigged and unprincipled free-market democracy where the public is manipulated to buy falsely-packaged political products offered by a red-and-blue political monopoly (that serves the homeland enemy) that are falsely advertised by a news-and-entertainment media machine (that serves the homeland enemy). The dishonesty runs so broad and deep that Ronald Reagan remarked how soap (a consumer product)is sold far more honestly than politicians and issues (political products) are sold. Today all branches of our "communication" industry (advertising, public relations, journalism, entertainment) and all forms of our mass media (print, radio, television, film, corporate-owned and public-owned) participate in this mass destruction of our democracy and common good. The result? More and more of our "majority-is-right" democratic outcomes violate our Constitution's humanity and law, wound America and our posterity -- and hurt other nations and their people and the environment, all part of our support system, which is now lashing back against us.
The 'democracy' they are shaping in Iraq is a fraction as democratic.
They expertly use our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Flag, God, and Support our Troops as emotionally-charged symbols to achieve their homeland-enemy aims that violate our Declaration of Independence, Constitution, Flag, God, and lives of our troops and their families.
Unbridled and free to do as they please, the homeland enemy is busily assaulting and wounding the very heart and soul of America: democratic processes, representative governance, justice, domestic tranquility needed for a "United" States of America, national defense and homeland/national security, the general welfare, liberty, ourselves, and our posterity. Hopefully a modern version of the Continental Congress will form and complete this list of homeland-enemy injustices and include it in a new version of the Declaration of Independence that would kick off American Revolution II:
Democratic processes. Crippled. They warped traditional civics education, in the recent past taught by public schools and by responsible leadership, into mass media brainwashing of unprincipled "free-market democracy" that bears very little resemblance to the principled "American democracy" embodied in our Constitution (which ISN'T generic "majority is right" democracy). They corrupted our free press into a media machine that protects and serves the unchecked consolidated wealth and power that's subverting and hurting America. Our two major political parties are red and blue favors of the wealth-and-power political monopoly that exploits America (and the world) as they wave the Flag and display piety to hide it. Only pro-homeland-enemy information is allowed in the mass media. Only pro-homeland-enemy candidates are allowed onto ballots. During election process itself, several underhanded processes tilt the vote toward red. No matter who we vote for, the homeland enemy wins -- the most harmful choices more and more often. All of our democratic processes are now heavily rigged to favor the homeland enemy, the enemy within.
Representative governance. Corrupted. Today the White House and Congress represent and serve wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients in exchange for wealth/corporate cash and Christian-Right votes. They are creating a wealth/corporate Christian-Right Judiciary. Our military academies and military officer corps are turning Christian Right. Our nation's advertising and PR industries, news and entertainment industries, and all forms of mass media aid and abet this wide and deep destruction of representative governance. They are guided by selfish wealth/corporate wishes, and by inhumane interpretations of the Bible, instead of by the humanity and law in our Constitution.
Justice. They deepen injustice, they make justice less equal, both in several ways. They've seen to it that crimes committed by the well-off and by leaders in whom we place our trust go unpunished, but they over-punish lesser offenders to create an appearance of justice in America. They created laws that protect corporations who harm and steal from and kill people. And so on.
Domestic tranquility needed for a "United" States of America. They manipulate We the People to be so polarized and divisive we that can't unite or cooperate to carry out our Constitution -- that is, so that We the People CAN'T be the government of America and CAN'T wield supreme power. They insure domestic discord to divide and conquer us in order to take our wealth and power.
National defense. They keep the public and new generations in the dark about the foremost national-defense duty of all American citizens: be eternally vigilant to prevent flare-up in our homeland of consolidated wealth and power that could subvert and hurt our special form of democracy and our bountiful common well-being; they do it as part of their broad program to weaken civic understanding and civic power, including by destroying public-school civics education, that our country needs to protect itself against threats from within. In the 1980s in Afghanistan/Pakistan they created a jihad proxy military weapon which led directly to 9/11, and today they execute foreign policies that fuel and grow that terrorism threat.
The general welfare. They hurt K-12 and higher education under guises of improving education. They drive up the consumer cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, which cuts their availability to the middle class and poor. They reduce economic opportunity and financial security of millions of citizens and their families, resulting in more homelessness and poverty in America. They mine the wealth of today's citizens in myriad ways, they mine our country's treasury and public trust funds and natural resources in several ways, they mine the wealth of our future citizens, in a massive trickle-up tax-fleecing corporate-gouging Reverse-Robin-Hooding scheme. They cut public safety: food and drug safety, product and vehicle safety, workplace safety, environmental safety, safety from natural disasters by removing emergency preparedness from FEMA, safety from outside threats by having created and then growing the terrorism threat. Through numerous mounting attacks on the general welfare, they cause at least 20-times-more homeland deaths -- every year -- than were caused on 9/11 by their discarded jihad weapon. And so on. The complete list of their systematic assaults on the general welfare is long and horrifying.
Liberty. They strip away privacy, restrict freedoms, discourage and block free speech toward the public interest, punish whistleblowers and dissenters, and more.
Ourselves. All the assaults and wounds above are being inflicted on the vast majority of conservative and liberal Americans.
Our posterity. Due to their deficit spending and draining of public trust funds, the White House and Congress bury our posterity under a mountain of federal debt and interest; today, every new citizen born in the USA is instantly burdened at birth with a $1/8-million share of that growing liability. That's just one of the many ways they hurt our future citizens. If We the People continue to give free rein to consolidated wealth and power and their media machine, then all forms of harm listed above will intensify and be inflicted on our posterity.
Hopefully many concerned citizens -- conservative and liberal individuals and groups (including patriotic lawyers and legal/justice organizations) -- will join together to fill in and complete the above shortlist. As a vital part of this cooperative civic task, link each and every injustice -- each assault and wound to our principled self-governance and five classes of common well-being -- to its exact violation of the US Constitution. At the very least, the enemy within has violated the Preamble, Article 1, Article 2, Article 6, separation of powers, and separation of church and state in technicality and spirit; their violations of the First Amendment are minor infractions in comparison. Preparing this list -- of moral injustices against America, of violations of America's supreme law -- is part of the first step of the big-picture full solution (see conclusion).
The enemy's most unprincipled assault on the general welfare is perhaps their assault on education under guises of improving education. They hurt K-12 education: They mandate more and more student testing, which diverts growing flows of taxpayer money into for-profit education companies that design and manufacture and score the mandated tests; besides eating up school budgets, it eats up so much classroom time that teachers after they "teach the test" have insufficient time remaining in the school year to teach the genuine substance of public education. Their privatization strategy for K-12 works like this: charter and private schools are selective -- through various means they attract potential higher-test-scoring students and avoid enrolling potential lower-test-scoring students, and leave the children they don't want left behind in public schools which cannot be selective -- which sets up public schools to have inferior test scores, then be punished by federal No-Child-Left-Behind funding cuts for having those lower test scores, which pressures public-run education to slowly fail and gradually be replaced by corporate-run education. Which would create a massive for-profit K-12 education industry (capping their huge profiteering success with higher education). They try to force Christian-Right-based science education on schools, a type of education that eventually would damage America's critical-thinking ability and science expertise. They keep civics education out of our public-run and for-profit schools which weakens the ability of our future generations to be good citizens and wisely and humanely self-govern America. Including by using textbooks and mandated tests that come from news/media/publishing conglomerates who slant teaching and testing content toward wealth/corporate and Christian-Right interests; students must learn and schools must teach that corrupt content or else be punished with low scores and funding cuts. Through those and many other methods, they are causing America's K-12 education quality to fall and the economic and social costs born by the public to rise. They hurt higher education also: In the early 1980s they persuaded all fifty states to reduce financial support to higher education which escalated college-education costs for students. Then they created the student-loan industry to extract sizable debt/interest payments from those students over much of their lifetimes. They reduced federal funding to colleges serving lower-income students and raised it to universities attended by higher-income students. They cut federal aid to needy students. All of which heavily burdens students from less-well-off families. Soon, higher education will be only for those born into wealth.
As you review the shortlist two paragraphs above, solidify in your mind how the White House and Congress and Judiciary, aided and abetted by reds and blues and the press, work together and toward all that subversion and harm in order to satisfy their wealth/corporate and Christian-Right clients as well as to acquire their own personal spoils of wealth and power.
As normal human beings, we are supposed to respond to corruption with moral disgust, to injustice with moral outrage, and then with unity and cooperation to end corruption and injustice -- that natural wisdom and humanity, embedded in our genes to aid survival of our species, is our innate-human civic power. As ordinary good citizens, we are supposed to ensure that We the People are the government of America and supreme power in America, and in order to benefit ourselves and our posterity we are supposed to provide and protect and preserve our democratic processes, representative governance, and the five categories of common well-being listed in the first sentence of our Constitution -- that patriotic wisdom and humanity, embodied in our Law of the Land and symbolized by our Flag, is our supreme-law civic power. Why DON'T we use these two civic powers anymore? Because the consolidated-wealth-and-power membership, who in selfish pursuits subvert and hurt America and who employ a media machine to mask their harmful character and to hide their wrongdoing from the public they harm, have systematically smothered and almost snuffed out our human and legal civic powers. But scattered embers still burn. Fire them up and fan the flames to neutralize that homeland enemy and media machine, and to restore and grow our democracy and common well-being, as demanded by the natural wisdom-and-humanity of our species and by America's supreme law deeply rooted in that brightness and goodness of human nature.
How? Use hidden truth, early American history, our Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, our Bill of Rights, irresistible selling points, and primal human urges for fairness and justice. Examples? Expose how the homeland enemy is "right" and not "conservative," how true conservatives and true liberals are both as progressive as the humanity and law in our Constitution, how in sharp contrast the right massively violates America's humanity and law as if in sympathy with the enemy of 1776, how right-wingers and true conservatives are as different as night and day, how the right with mass-media help wears a conservative mask to deceive the public (which tarnishes true conservatism), how the Christian Right with mass-media help hijacked mainstream evangelical Christianity to deceive good Christians into supporting their inhumanity (giving evangelical Christianity an image so cruel some churches have had to remove the word "evangelical"). Combat the homeland enemy's Divide and Conquer, such as the way they pit conservatives and liberals against each other so they can't see or fight the right wing hurting them both, with Unite and Cooperate as Colonial America did against the enemy of 1776. Value of those two strategies? They would help draw 200 million conservative and liberal mainstream citizens into a common American fold. Execute a modern version of Paul Revere's ride to warn America nationwide about the homeland enemy. Form a new version of the American Revolution's Continental Congress: a broad-based conservative and liberal national civic-action congress, operating outside of unjust government but inside of supreme law, to unite and build and coordinate and direct citizen forces against the homeland enemy. The congress, of course, would issue a new version of the Declaration of Independence that would 1] describe the homeland enemy, 2] list how the enemy and their media machine hurt our democratic processes, representative governance, and all five classes of common well-being and exactly how they violated our Constitution in the process of committing all that harm, and 3] declare America's resolve to neutralize the homeland enemy and their media machine and to restore and grow America's principled self-governance and bountiful common good. By what legal authority? "We, the People... provide for the common defence" of America against the homeland enemy and their media machine. A spin-off from the congress? Birth of new political party, say a "USA" party, that would defeat today's two major parties in landslide victories all over America. One way to sell it? Show how taxpayer-financed political campaigns costing every taxpayer $50 a year, together with other reforms to assure democratic processes and representative governance, would in the end save the average conservative taxpayer and the average liberal taxpayer about $15,000 a year in tax fleecing and corporate gouging. That's just one improvement to "the general Welfare." Many other selling points -- similar boosts in justice, domestic tranquility and its unity and cooperation, national security, other aspects of the general welfare, and liberty -- are equally as riveting. The natural civic power to fire up nationwide? Moral disgust and moral outrage -- they ignited and fueled American Revolution I which created America -- would also work wonders a second time around, this time an American Revolution II to fix America.
Besides campaign-finance reform, what other reforms? Media reform to have a free and honest press again; it would include restoration of the FCC's Fairness Doctrine and public-service requirements that were removed in the 1980s, and de-consolidation of media ownership back to the FCC's prudent early levels. Political-influence reforms, beginning with reforms of political advertising and lobbying; no other democracies allow political advertising as undemocratic and harmful as America's; the practice of revolving-door-turncoat lobbying, where members of the White House and Congress after they leave office become insider lobbyists for the same clients they served as public servants and draw huge lobbyist salaries AND lavish retirement income and benefits from We the People, must be curbed. Judicial and court reforms to remove judges dangerously sympathetic with the wealthy and with corporations and with the Christian Right, from the Supreme Court on down, especially those whose selection and installation violated of separation of powers and separation of church and state; our Constitution tells how (abolish lower courts that have such judges then re-create them and appoint pro-We-the-People judges, reduce the size of the Supreme Court to eliminate as many pro-homeland-enemy judges as possible then increase the Court's size and appoint pro-We-the-People judges to assure a majority that's safe for America). Corporate-law reform to remove "corporate personhood" (the legal principle that corporations were created equal to people and possess inalienable rights like people do) from all US law, because a corporation, which cannot vote like a person, exploits that principle to gain vastly more representation in the White House and Congress and Judiciary than an ordinary non-voting person can; corporate personhood, besides having been preposterous and anathema to America's founders, has a shaky and shady legal foundation: the 1886 Supreme Court decision that supposedly granted personhood rights to corporations was not an actual court decision -- it was an assertion by a single judge, was not deliberated by the court, was falsely entered into the summary record as a court decision, and thus became a false basis of modern corporate law; We the People can blow down that legal house of cards and rebuild it into a just system of corporate law where true democracy, the common good, and corporate profit are all well served. Civics-education reform. Reforms to safeguard separation of powers, separation of corporation and state, and separation of church and state. These reforms would restore our democratic processes and representative governance, which would pave the way to regrow our five classes of common well-being -- including tax reform and health-care reform under the "promote the general Welfare" category of America's common good.
American Revolution II would be a long-overdue major maintenance and tune-up of our democracy that would lift our America, today soiled and damaged by unchecked wealth and power and their media machine, back up to the morality and law symbolized by our Flag and embodied in our Constitution. It could begin right now. Web/print/broadcast journalists could easily expand popular understanding of what America is all about merely by tacking on and talking up "common good" whenever they mention "democracy" -- our country is about "democracy" AND "common good," FIVE MAJOR KINDS of common good -- and how it's the duty of citizens, leaders, and media to cooperatively foster and assure it. School boards, school administrations, state governments, and all educators could unite and begin plans to weave core human development and Civics 101 back into public education; Rhea Perlman (Carla on Cheers), as host of a public-education program on PBS years ago, concluded, "Unless we teach wisdom and humanity, we are doomed" (plenty of the wisdom and humanity is taught by the first sentence of our Constitution). Whenever a supporter of the homeland enemy angrily accuses you of being a terrorist while you're fostering democracy and the common good or when you're protesting acts that violate them, pull out your copy of the Constitution and point to the words that spell out exactly what you are doing as a true patriotic American; for example, if you are an environmentalist you are a member of "We, the People... promot[ing] the general Welfare... to ourselves and our Posterity," and so on. Mainstream religion, whose moral values are so very similar to the moral values in the first sentence of our Constitution, could sow more seeds of human-to-human goodness: energetically foster humanity within and by America, including through inter-faith cooperation to stop and reverse the Christian Right's spread of inhumanity. All concerned citizens and groups, conservative and liberal, beginning right now could start contacting each other and start talking with each other about how to create the new Continental Congress and the new Declaration of Independence needed for American Revolution II. The four-element plan in brief?
Element 1. As our human nature, ancient wisdom, Paul Revere, the Continental Congress, and Declaration of Independence instruct us, unite and cooperate to warn America about the homeland enemy and their media machine and how they are subverting and hurting us. Organize, declare, and launch (as summarized in paragraphs above) the four-element full solution to stop the enemy and fix America.
Element 2. Rebuild our nation's first line of defense. Strengthen the core citizenship skills the enemy weakened: respect, responsibility, cooperation, critical thinking; these core wisdom-and-humanity skills are basic survival skills of our species, they used to be listed on grade-school report cards as goals of social/emotional/intellectual human development because they are the foundation and hallmarks of adult maturity, they are needed within citizens otherwise they cannot fully understand or deeply care about our Constitution. Restore the Civics-101 education the enemy purged from our public schools. Both are vital for strong homeland/national security, that is, for eternal vigilance and resolute defense by citizens against wealth-and-power threats from within.
Element 3. Ask the White House and Congress and mass media to switch sides: from serving the homeland enemy back to serving We the People and our posterity again. If it fails, do Element 4.
Element 4. Create and grow the new "USA" political party (as summarized in paragraphs above) backed by the conservative-and-liberal 90% majority of all citizens being hurt by the 10% right-wing minority. After reading Element 1's new Declaration of Independence and the new party's platform -- both would be so broad-based, well-distributed, patriotically powerful, and packed with irresistible selling points that our current leaders and the press and hate radio and talking heads could not possibly suppress it or spin-and-twist it into wacko conspiracy or a criminal/terrorist attack on America -- the 90% majority would clearly understand how they and their posterity were systematically betrayed and exploited and harmed by Republicans and Democrats. Moral disgust and moral outrage, primordial feelings that naturally well up and direct humans to act en masse toward their own common well-being, would assure landslide victories.
To build unity and cooperation, to enable individuals and groups to visualize how each and every separate effort contributes to the common cause, to create a patriotic sense of belonging to the cause of defending, restoring, and growing "American democracy," publish and distribute nationwide the outline or chart or illustration of the big picture and full solution. Each and every concerned citizen could then point with pride to the exact leaf or blossom on that Tree of American Democracy they are helping to nourish and flourish.
The goal is to again have a public trust -- a White House, Congress, Judiciary, political parties, and press -- that the public can trust. So that We the People can restore and grow the principled self-governance and bountiful common well-being embodied in our Constitution.
Unite and cooperate to achieve this conservative and liberal common dream.
